About the job
Center for Børn & Læring, Hvalsø Skole
Head of the Lower Secondary at Hvalsø School
Are you passionate about lower secondary pedagogy, strong communities and pedagogical development, where close collaboration is the key to success? Do you want to leave your mark on both the physical and pedagogical framework for our oldest students? Then you might be our new head of department.
We are entering an incredibly exciting time at Hvalsø School. The design of our brand new classrooms in the lower secondary is for us not just a construction project – it is a pedagogical starting point to create motivating, varied and future-oriented learning environments.
New curricula must be embedded in our pedagogical everyday life, with a focus on academic deepening, practice-oriented teaching, student involvement and strong academic and social communities.
All of this, and much more, helps drive our everyday life at Hvalsø School, with 725 wonderful students spread from 0th to 9th grade.
About the role and our pedagogical foundation
To lead this process, we are looking for a head of department who sees themselves as a close, approachable and sparring-ready partner for both teachers, pedagogues and the rest of the management team. With us you will be the leader of a lower secondary where we pull together as a team, and where pedagogical visions are translated into practice in alignment with everyday life.
Pedagogical starting point in new framework: You will have a very special opportunity to influence the lower secondary’s physical and pedagogical framework. We have just built and furnished new classrooms, and we want you to use this process to rethink learning methods, well-being and academic deepening. Collaboration is the effort: We believe that good collaboration is our most important tool.
You will facilitate a strong cross-disciplinary environment where team collaboration thrives, and where you are a visible sparring partner in daily life. Practice-oriented development: We work from a practice-oriented approach. For us, school development happens through joint testing in the classroom, reflection, feedback and continuous learning rather than theoretical desk models.
We are looking for a head of department who
Has a strong view of the special needs, motivation and well-being of lower secondary students. Is development-oriented and can create followership, direction and enthusiasm in the staff group. Meets staff as a listening, supportive and academically strong collaborative partner. Can link overarching strategic goals with a practice-oriented daily life so that visions become concrete teaching. Sees the redesign of new facilities as a prime opportunity to create inspiring and contemporary learning environments.
Your primary tasks and areas of responsibility
Department leadership: You will assume the daily pedagogical and personnel leadership of the lower secondary. Planning and timetable creation: You have the overall responsibility for the school’s timetable – both the daily schedule and the overall annual planning. This does not include daily substitute coverage. Close management collaboration: You will be an active co-player in the school’s overall leadership team, where we plan and steer the school year’s tasks and the overall strategic direction together.
