About the job
Climate change and increasing risk of erosion and flooding fill more than ever. At the Environmental Agency, Lemvig, we are seeking an engaged colleague with coastal engineering expertise and experience with authority processing, who will help ensure a holistic and professionally sound management of the Danish coasts.
The Environmental Agency plays a central role in climate adaptation along the Danish coasts. We advise municipalities and other actors on the consequences of climate change, including flooding and coastline retreat, and support planning and decisions through professional assessments, risk analyses, authority processing and risk communication.
As our new colleague you will become part of the work with climate adaptation and management of the coastal zone. You will take on a role where your coastal engineering knowledge is combined with authority tasks, and where you must be able to translate complex professional problems into clear assessments, decisions and consultation responses.
You will, among other things, work with assessing coastal erosion, coastline retreat and the effect of different coastal protection solutions, depending on your competences. You will also participate in the handling of concrete cases, including consultations, opinions and decisions, and help ensure that cases are processed on a solid professional and administrative basis.
An important part of the work will be the dialogue with municipalities, citizens, consultants and other authorities. Here you must be able to convey coastal technical conditions in a way that makes complex issues understandable, while maintaining the professional and authorities requirements.
You will also be able to participate in tasks related to the joint contractual frameworks on the Jutland west coast as well as in guidance and training of municipalities on coastal processes, coastal protection and climate adaptation. Depending on your competences and experience you will also be able to participate in national and international collaborations.
About you
We are looking for a colleague with a relevant academic background and experience within coastal engineering, coastal processes, physical geography or a related area. It is an advantage if you also have experience with authority processing and case handling.
We expect that you
- Have solid knowledge of the dynamics of the coastal zone, erosion and the effect of different coastal protection solutions.
- Have experience with authority processing and case handling, including preparation and assessment of consultations, opinions, professional assessments and decisions.
- Can combine your technical and natural scientific understanding with a good grasp of legislation, administrative considerations and the authority role.
- Have strong analytical skills and experience in collecting, processing and assessing both qualitative and quantitative data.
- Can assess complex coastal technical issues and translate them into clear conclusions and basis for decision-making.
- Work in a structured and independent manner and can maintain an overview in complex cases with many stakeholders.
- Are good at written and spoken communication and can convey technically complex issues to both professionals, municipalities, citizens and other stakeholders.
- Have an understanding of the coast’s various natural and vegetation conditions and their significance for coastal development.
- Work in a holistic and application-oriented manner and have an eye for the connection between technology, nature, administration and climate adaptation.
We place particular emphasis on your ability to combine coastal technical professionalism with the authority task. You do not need to know everything from the start, but you must be willing to use your expertise in concrete cases and help develop both our methods and our authority work.
Tasks in the unit and organization
In the Coastal Zone Management unit we work with both classic authority processing of installations on territorial waters, beach protection and dune protection, handling applications to the Coastal Fund, as well as opinions and consultations under the Coastal Protection Act. We are 28 dedicated employees with diverse professional backgrounds – including geographers, geologists, biologists and lawyers. Our interdisciplinary approach ensures that we can solve complex tasks with high quality.
The Coastal Zone Management is part of the Environmental Agency, and together with several other units we form the area of Coasts and Climate Adaptation, which is located in Lemvig.
With us you will have the opportunity to work on some of the central challenges that climate change brings to the Danish coasts, and you will become part of a professional environment where natural science, coastal engineering and authority tasks go hand in hand.
