About the job

Director

Do you want to be a unifying profile for the Danish museums, set an ambitious strategic direction and secure museums a strong common voice? Can you combine political acumen and strategic vision with approachable leadership and good collaboration skills? Then you should take a closer look at the position of Director for Danske Museer.

Museums in Denmark have great cultural and social significance and in 2025 had 17.6 million visits. Danske Museer, as an advocacy organization, gathers 172 museums and conservation centres – including all nationally recognized and state museums – and works for good framework conditions, visibility and development for the museums.

As Director, you are responsible for Danske Museer’s strategic and organizational development. You report to the board and, in close collaboration with it and the secretariat, translate ambitions into priorities, actions and results.

You set the long-term direction, strengthen the organization’s political position and influence the museums’ framework conditions through robust advocacy. This requires you to be strategically strong, politically secure and able to deliver results through relationships.

We are looking for a Director who has experience with advocacy and board collaboration as well as understanding of political decision-making processes. You have relevant networks and insight into the museum sector or a related cultural field and can naturally create legitimacy in the role.

You bring together a diverse membership of museums across size, profession, geography and organization. As the representatives of the museums you communicate clearly outward, are present and engaged in the museum landscape and build trust internally. You lead a small, highly qualified secretariat and ensure a clear direction, sharp priorities, employee well-being and responsible financial management.

As a leader you are clear, unifying and decisive. You create followership through credibility, integrity and professional substance. You combine impact with diplomacy and communicate confidently across strategic, political and organizational levels.

Your workplace will be Vartov in Copenhagen, and you can expect substantial travel.
