About the job

Nurse for highly specialized neurorehabilitation

Rigshospitalet Glostrup – Department of Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries

Do you want to use your full nursing professionalism – and at the same time have time for the person you are facing?

Some patients challenge your professional skills. Others remind you why you became a nurse. With us, both happen.

With us you get a daily life where acute and complex nursing goes hand in hand with rehabilitation, relationship and care. You will meet patients who may be critically ill and need you to respond quickly and safely – but also patients where small progress, a good relationship and your ability to create security makes a big difference.

You will use your clinical eye, your professional knowledge and your action-orientation. But you will also use your ability to be present, build trust and see the person behind the brain injury.

You do not need to know everything when you start. We want you with us if you want to learn.

A specialty with both complexity and presence

Bodil Eskesen Center houses Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries. We receive patients from all of Eastern Denmark as well as the Faroe Islands and Greenland – from 1 year and up.

Patients are admitted with severe acquired brain injuries after, among other things, trauma, severe stroke, hypoxia after cardiac arrest and complex cerebral infections.

Many come directly from an intensive care course and are still critically ill when they arrive. Others are further along in their course, where there is more calm and time for rehabilitation.

This means that your nursing can look very different from day to day. Some days it's about preserving overview, reacting quickly and using your clinical eye in complex and acute situations. Other days there is time for the good conversation, the relationship and the small things that matter to the patient or the relatives.

It is precisely the variation that makes the specialty exciting.

The nursing here

Neurorehabilitative nursing is an autonomous discipline. It builds on your clinical eye, because many of our patients cannot tell what is wrong themselves. You must be able to read the small changes – in breathing, tone, pupils or in what suddenly is not as it usually is.

You assess and act on neurological changes, EWS and changes in the patient’s condition. You work among other things with dysphagia, nutrition and tube feeding, airways and secretions, pain and spasticity as well as medication, where effect and side effects often must be read clinically.

You also encounter delirium and agitation, where it requires professionalism, calm and curiosity to find the right approach.

At the same time you help to keep the patient’s care pathway coherent. You follow rehabilitation goals into nursing, share your observations with the interdisciplinary colleagues, and you are often the one who translates between professional groups and relatives. You plan the day with an eye to ensuring the patient has energy when training is to take place.

We work based on Fundamentals of Care, where the person is seen as a whole, and where physical, psychological and social needs are part of professional nursing.

For our patients sleep, nutrition, dignity, security and contact are not something that comes in addition to rehabilitation – they are an important part of it. Here, care plays a central role. It may be to create calm around the patient, be present when the situation is difficult, support the patient in small progress or be the one who sees and feels what the patient needs when words are not enough. That is also nursing.

You follow the patient over time

With us you follow the same patients over weeks and months. You learn their history, their relatives and the small signs that tell you that something is moving in the right – or wrong – direction.

You become part of a close multidisciplinary team with doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, neuropsychologists, speech and language therapists and social and health care assistants. We actively use each other’s professional strengths, and your nursing assessment is in demand.

It also means you have the opportunity to see the progress of the patients and the result of the nursing you provide.

We make a special effort for your start

We know that a good introduction is decisive when starting in a highly specialized department.

Therefore you are off the norm for the first five weeks so you have time to get to know the patient group, the workflows and your new colleagues.

We strive for a good and safe start with the possibility of close sparring with experienced colleagues and access to clinical nursing specialists in everyday life. The introduction is based on your experiences and needs, so you gradually can build your competencies.

You do not need to know the specialty in advance. You learn that with us. If you are a recent graduate, you are also very welcome to apply.

Your professionalism may grow with you

When the introduction ends, learning does not stop.

We have a competence development program with five levels, which gives you the opportunity to continually develop your competencies in step with your experience and interests.

You will receive mono- and interprofessional teaching, opportunities for courses and continuing education as well as sparring with experienced colleagues and clinical nursing specialists.

You may also have the opportunity to specialise in a professional area, e.g. dysphagia, wounds or nutrition – or within another area that captures your interest, where you want to develop your professional skills and share your knowledge with colleagues.

If you are interested in research, there is an opportunity to become involved in research projects through our interdisciplinary research unit.

A working life that must fit with life outside

An exciting specialty is important. The same goes for a working life that works with the rest of life.

You can work part-time or full-time and mainly day/evening or day/night. We have our own shift planner, with whom you can discuss your wishes and needs.

We work with weekend shifts every 2nd, 3rd or 4th weekend, depending on the shift plan and department operations. We also strive to create a shift plan where work and private life fit as much as possible.

A community you will want to be a part of

Professionalism is a large part of our daily life – but so is community.

We place emphasis on a close collegial environment, where we can be serious about our work, help each other and still have fun together. We prioritize a close relationship between staff and management with room for both professional and personal sparring.

For us, a good workplace is about creating a meaningful everyday life, collaboration and belief that we can make a difference for the patients together.

Is it you?

We are looking for you who

  • want to work with critically ill patients and complex patient pathways
  • are curious about the neurological specialty
  • want to develop your clinical eye and your nursing professionalism
  • can act independently when a situation suddenly becomes acute
  • take responsibility for your own learning and dare to ask when there is something you do not know
  • can accommodate relatives in crisis – even when the answer is that we do not know yet
  • thrive in an environment where we learn from each other and work closely across professions
  • want to contribute to both professionalism and community.

You do not need to be able to do everything when you start. We expect, however, that you want to learn.

Come by – we’ll treat you to coffee

It can be hard to feel a workplace through a job advertisement.

Therefore you are very welcome to come by, see our house, meet some of your future colleagues and hear more about everyday life on the ward.

The coffee is always ready, and you are welcome to ask anything not stated in the advertisement.
