About the job
Blue lights, speed and tempo call for a presence-driven leadership that thrives in the tension between being proactive, reactive and working with long-term strategic plans as the basis for staff well-being and patients' perceived quality. If you thrive with a varied leadership portfolio and you want to shape the development of the acute patient pathways at Region Hospital Horsens, we have the position for you.
We are seeking, as of January 1, 2027, a distinctive and courageous Chief Nurse who, together with the Chief Medical Officer, is ready to make their mark in our well-functioning and professionally grounded Emergency Department. Our new Chief Nurse prefers to be a co-creator of a workplace where employees experience a high degree of belonging based on involvement and strong relationships.
Our Chief Nurse
The Chief Nurse works closely with the department's Chief Medical Officer, hospital management and the department leadership circle in strategic, organizational and interdisciplinary development work. The Chief Nurse has a special responsibility for the continued development of nursing, including implementation of the new specialty training in acute nursing, as well as nursing quality in the department.
The Chief Nurse also collaborates closely with the department's multidisciplinary function leadership group – consisting of the healthcare administrative leader, deputy chief nurses and senior physicians – on daily operations and the interdisciplinary development work.
Together with the function leaders, the staff and the patients there is also a shared task to rethink the acute patient pathways on the patient’s terms, including in collaboration with the other departments at the hospital, our cross-sector partners and other hospitals in Region Midtjylland. A new concrete task will be to plan and implement acute psychiatric pathways in the department.
A central ambition is to develop the Emergency Department's outward function so that more patient pathways in the future can be handled outside the hospital – through closer collaboration with general practice, municipalities and other sectors. It requires a Chief Nurse who can drive real transformative leadership and rethink how and where the patients we currently receive in the Emergency Department are best helped going forward.
Therefore we are seeking a Chief Nurse who together with the Chief Medical Officer can form a strong and proactive leadership team, with the following qualifications:
- Can balance the consideration of both development and safe operation
- Action-oriented and decisive, ensuring momentum and sustainable results
- A personality who naturally serves as a role model for professionalism and integrity in the department
- A dialogue-based leadership style with presence and empathy
- A dynamic and delegating leadership style that challenges structures and ways of thinking and at the same time initiates and strengthens research and development
- A solid leadership background, characterized by a desire to pave the way and the ability to motivate and give space to the staff
- Well-developed organizational skills
Furthermore you as our new Chief Nurse can
- balance between the need for quick actions and the necessary reflection
- lead and inspire a multidisciplinary staff according to the hospital's strategic track: 'More people', 'Greater coherence', 'More professionalism' and 'Stronger relations'
- collaborate across sectors and translate political goals and policies into action within the approved budgets
- demonstrate solid business understanding and ability to manage economically, ensuring responsible resource prioritization and sustainable operation within the department's financial framework
- create frameworks, routines and stability in a changing external environment
- contribute to a positive workplace culture and a good psychological work environment, where respect, trust and kindness are highly valued – for both patients and staff
- develop and contribute to staff well-being through involvement and engagement
- be clear and define concrete requirements and expectations for others
Collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer, the department's function leaders, the department leadership circle and hospital management is highly valued. Our new Chief Nurse regards leadership as an independent discipline on a par with the nursing professional responsibility and has visions for both professional development and profiling as well as leadership and leadership development in the department.
About the Emergency Department
The Emergency Department is an independent department with its own departmental leadership, function leaders and about 150 staff. A strong sense of community, good relationships and psychological safety form the framework for a good working environment and high well-being among staff. The department's nursing group is characterized by a solid level of competence and high professionalism, which is reflected in low staff turnover and great interest from relevant candidates when we have positions advertised.
The department receives acute medical, surgical and orthopedic patients for admission. In addition, the department handles the accident department function and assists the on-call doctor. The Emergency Department has about 35,000 contacts per year. The admitted patients are triaged and received in the Emergency Department and more than 60% of the patients are discharged directly from the unit after up to 2 days of hospitalization. The remainder are transferred to further treatment in the main departments.
The Emergency Department has special functions such as hospital admission, acute coordination, round-the-clock secretarial and flow coordination. The department also has a secretary group that supports both patient pathways and the administrative operation, and that is integrated as an element of the interdisciplinary collaboration. In addition, there are social nurses who help colleagues across the entire Region Hospital Horsens.
