About the job

Head of the Lower Secondary at Hvalsø School

Are you passionate about lower-secondary education, strong communities and pedagogical development, where close collaboration is the key to success? Do you want to shape the physical and pedagogical framework for our oldest pupils? Then you may be our new Department Head.

We are facing an incredibly exciting time at Hvalsø School. The design of our brand-new classrooms in the lower secondary is for us not just a construction project – it is a pedagogical starting point to create motivating, varied and future-proof learning environments.

New curricula must be embedded in our pedagogical didactic daily life, with focus on subject-area deepening, practice-oriented teaching, student involvement and strong academic and social communities.

All this, and much more, helps drive our daily life at Hvalsø School, with 725 wonderful students spread from kindergarten to 9th grade.

About the role and our pedagogical foundation

To lead this process we are seeking a Department Head who sees themselves as a close, approachable and sparring-ready partner for both teachers, educators and the rest of the leadership team. With us you will lead a lower secondary where we pull together, and where pedagogical visions are translated into practice in lockstep with daily life.

Pedagogical starting point in new environments: You will have a very special opportunity to shape the lower secondary’s physical and pedagogical frameworks. We have just built and furnished new classrooms, and we want you to use this process to rethink learning methods, well-being and academic deepening. Collaboration is the effort: We believe that good cooperation is our most important tool.

You will facilitate a strong interdisciplinary environment where teamwork thrives, and where you are a visible sparring partner in daily work. Practice-oriented development: We work from a practice-oriented approach. For us, school development happens through joint experimentation in the classroom, reflection, feedback and continuous learning rather than theoretical desk models.

We are looking for a Department Head who

Has a strong eye for the special needs, motivation and well-being of lower-secondary students. Is development-oriented and can create followership, direction and enthusiasm in the staff group. Meets staff as a listening, supportive and academically strong collaborative partner. Can connect overarching strategic goals with a practice-oriented everyday life, so visions become concrete teaching. Sees the renovation of new premises as an obvious opportunity to create inspiring and contemporary learning environments.

Your primary tasks and areas of responsibility

Department leadership: You manage the daily pedagogical and personnel leadership of the lower secondary. Planning and timetable scheduling: You hold the overall responsibility for the school's timetable – both the daily schedule and the overarching annual planning. This does not include daily substitute coverage. Close leadership collaboration: You will be an active participant in the school's overall leadership team, where we together plan and drive the school year’s tasks and the overall strategic direction.

If you would like to know more about the school or the vacant position, you are very welcome to contact the leadership, and you are welcome to visit us.

School Principal Lars Hansson at tel. 29200161 or Deputy Principal Henrik Mandrup at tel. 29200162.

Application deadline Sunday 15 November 2027.

First interview will be held Thursday 19 November 2027.

Second interview will be held Tuesday 24 November 2027.

Date of employment

We would like the position to be filled on 1 January 2027.
