Facts about the Gynaecological-Obstetric Department at Aalborg University Hospital

We have a targeted focus on professional development in a good working environment. The department covers functions at all levels of the specialty plan, including a number of highly specialized functions and regional functions within the gynecological-obstetric area, cf. the specialty plan for gynecology and obstetrics.

The department receives both elective and acute patients for admission. The Gynaecological-Obstetric Department has its own emergency function and reception for both pregnant women and acute gynecological patients.

The department is structured into an acute delivery admission with 4 beds, the delivery ward with 12 delivery rooms, 6 maternity beds, 10 rooms for family birth, 5 obstetric day-unit beds and 16 maternity beds + cradles, as well as 10 gynecological beds, 8 beds in the Day Surgical Unit and an acute gynecological reception as well as an operating theatre, among other facilities equipped with robots and 3D laparoscopic equipment.

The medical staffing consists of 26 consultants, including 6 senior consultants, in addition to the chief physician and 2 professors. The department employs on average 20 training-producing medical doctors.

The specialty handles approximately 9,000 gynecological-obstetric admissions and about 3,200 births. Outpatient examinations account for about 65,000 consultations and 18,000 virtual contacts in the gynecological and obstetric wards, including the ultrasound clinic, the incontinence clinic and the Fertility Clinic. The operative capacity amounts to just over 9,000 procedures.

The department has a well-functioning research unit with 2 professors and 4 Ph.D. students attached. The department is involved in many diverse research projects.

The department is normed for 2 educationally responsible senior physicians as well as 2 junior educational coordinators (UKYL). The department serves as the educational department for the main training in gynecology and obstetrics and also teaches doctors for general practice in gynecology and obstetrics.

The department also participates in teaching and training of nursing staff and midwifery students.
