About the job
Can you build trust – and help create an overview? We are seeking a study support assistant for young people in our programs Some young people need a little extra support to make the daily life of education hang together.
It can be about structure and planning. About getting started with a task. About navigating in the teaching or creating an overview when things become a bit overwhelming. And sometimes it is simply about having a relationship with a person who knows you well enough to notice when something is slipping.
That’s where you come into the picture.
HEG is seeking a full-time employee for study support and SPS across several of our programs.
We conduct interviews on an ongoing basis and hire when we meet the right person.
Your task? To help – without taking over You will be working with young people who, for various reasons, need extra support to thrive and complete their education.
This may include students with, for example, ADHD, autism, dyslexia, mental or social challenges. Or students who for a period need help to create structure and find their way in the daily educational life.
You will among other things
- conduct individual SPS programs and other study support
- have conversations and mentorship-like programs with students
- help with structure, planning, overview and study habits
- support students in and around teaching
- collaborate with teachers, counsellors and other staff
- maintain contact with parents when relevant
- help the students gradually develop their own strategies and greater independence.
In short: You help the young person move forward – but you do not do the path for them.
Relationships are your most important tool You must be able to build trust. Meet the young person with calm and respect. Listen and be curious. But you must also be able to be clear, hold fast and follow up.
For some of the young people you meet, they do not always have the energy to seek out the support they need. Therefore you must both be able to reach out – and know when to give space.
We also have school homes, where a portion of our students live during their education. For them, a large part of youth life takes place with us even after the last class. Some student programs may, therefore, lie outside regular teaching hours by agreement with the student. Much of your work will however take place during daytime hours.
Your road to this does not need to be straight Maybe you are a teacher, pedagogue or counsellor. Maybe you have a social work background. Or maybe you come with something completely different.
You may be a skilled tradesperson and know the world of vocational education from the inside – and then have gained experience with young people, teaching, guidance or support work. That understanding of students' academic and practical everyday life can be a great strength.
You may also have further education or taken courses in, for example, special pedagogy, SPS, mentoring, ADHD, autism, dyslexia or relationship work.
In other words, we are less concerned with the exact title on your certificate and more concerned with what you can do with young people.
We especially emphasize that you
- are good at building relationships with young people
- have interest in – and preferably experience with – young people with different challenges and diagnoses
- approach young people with calm, respect and clarity
- can collaborate with parents and colleagues
- work independently and in a structured way
- want to work across different educations and subject environments.
When the small steps are actually quite big With us you get an independent and varied full-time job, where you have the opportunity to make a very concrete difference for young people.
Some days the difference may be that a student submits an assignment. Other days the week suddenly hangs together a little better. Or that a young person, who previously needed your help, finds a way forward on their own.
Because, in the end, that's what the job is about: creating better opportunities for more young people to succeed in their education – and gradually becoming more independent.
