About the job

We are seeking a laboratory technician apprentice for our Fish Biology research group, which studies fish physiological processes and morphological structures, with start on February 1, 2027. The position is linked to the education as a laboratory technician, where there is an obligatory internship period of 11 months.

The group\'s research creates new insights into fish biology, eco physiology and life-history strategy through experimental studies, field-based investigations and laboratory analyses. We focus on the effects of climate and environmental changes, biodiversity and sustainability on individual development, plasticity and welfare. The basis consists of controlled experiments, field studies and laboratory analyses, where we use physiological measurements, molecular biological methods and histology as tools in the laboratory.

Our results contribute to an increased understanding of population and ecosystem dynamics, which is essential in stock assessment and management of marine fish resources, as well as in relation to conservation biology and nature restoration. The goal is to create the necessary insight to balance long-term, sustainable use of fish as a food resource with an understanding of their biology and response to external environmental influences.

The work in the group takes place in an international research environment and in collaboration with colleagues from different disciplines.

Opportunity to acquire new competencies

The core tasks in the laboratory consist of biological analysis of sample material from fish at different life stages collected during experimental work and field studies. You will be trained in molecular and histological laboratory methods as well as physiological measurement techniques. You will be integrated into tasks related to our research projects and participate in safety work, chemical analyses as well as the general laboratory operations.

In relation to molecular biological studies, activities include analysis of gene expression including sample handling, RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, primer design and qPCR as well as quality control at all levels. DNA-based methods and genotyping are also included in the group\'s teaching at the BSc level.

Morphologically we work with histology including method development, especially staining techniques and image analysis related to fish reproductive physiology and morphology.

There will be the possibility to participate in experimental work and sampling, e.g. on research cruises, and to contribute to the group\'s teaching at the BSc level.

Our expectations of you

  • You have passed the theoretical part of the laboratory technician education at the start of the internship period.
  • You work carefully and systematically, and are motivated to learn to work both independently and in teams.
  • You are proactive, responsible and thrive in a flexible everyday life.
  • You have a genuine interest in biological and natural science subjects.
  • You read, write and speak English at a level where you can interact professionally and socially with international colleagues.

What we offer you

  • Thorough training and a good collaborative environment where our differences and complementary competencies are seen as a strength.
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration with a focus on exciting research projects and advisory tasks.
  • An active place in an international research group comprising researchers, assistants and students.
  • Challenging, varied and educational tasks where you gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment.

Salary and terms of employment

Salary and terms of employment in accordance with the OAO-S joint agreement and the organization agreement for office workers, laboratory technicians and IT staff (HK/State) concluded with the Ministry of Finance.

Employment is for 11 months with a start on 1 February 2027. The place of employment will be DTU Lyngby Campus.
