Midwife sought for a temporary position in a permanent post at Samsø, AUH

Full-time permanent position and maternity leave replacement as island midwife on Samsø.

From 1 December 2026 we are seeking a midwife for a permanent full-time position on Samsø and a midwife for a temporary position until 30 September 2027, the temporary position is in principle full-time.

Would you like to be part of the wonderful island life and an exciting workplace at Samsø and Aarhus University Hospital? The midwives are based at the Health and Emergency Building on Samsø, where there is close contact with both the public health nurse and island doctors.

Samsø is served by two midwives employed by the Department of Gynecology and Births at Aarhus University Hospital (AUH), but they work most hours on Samsø. There is always one midwife on duty and present on the island. The work is distributed with one on-call week on the island and one free week, during which there are 1-2 shifts in the delivery department at AUH. The midwives arrange the distribution of on-call weeks and holidays themselves.

There are 20 - 25 pregnant Samsingers per year, and there are visitiations so that only women with low risk can give birth on the island. All births on Samsø are considered home births and take place at the birth unit in the Health and Emergency Building on Samsø or in the woman's home.

Responsibilities and areas

Samsø Midwifery Center and Birth Suite arrangement is a service to families who want closeness, familiar surroundings and continuity combined with a high professional quality in midwifery work.

The midwives are responsible for

• pregnancy examinations and birth preparation on Samsø
• birth assistance on Samsø as well as acute supervision and transfer by ferry or helicopter
• daily calls to ambulant laboring patients from the delivery department at AUH
• postpartum care package and breastfeeding counseling as well as breastfeeding help at home
• there is currently negotiating a new collaboration agreement on Samsø, therefore the final tasks are not yet in place, but will include about 22 hours in the on-call week.

Competences

We expect you to be professionally well-founded and engaged in your field. Ideally experience with home births and competencies from independent work, teamwork, and other health-related work with a focus on counseling.

Personal qualifications

Because you are on your own during on-call, you must be robust personally and professionally, and you must be able to participate in interprofessional collaboration forums both internally in the Health and Emergency Building/Health Department and with external partners. You have a clear view of obstetric complications and emergencies while at the same time creating trust and security for the couples. You thrive with autonomous task solving and have an interest in primary health tasks in interaction with the municipality and other actors.

Prerequisites

You must live on Samsø during your on-call week, which consists of seven consecutive 24-hour shifts with calls from home.

Leadership of the midwifery function and planning of other tasks

The leadership of the midwifery function lies with Chief Midwife Marianne Raundal and Deputy Chief Midwife Sidsel Sandgaard. The planning of other tasks in the on-call week is being clarified and will be described and introduced as soon as they are in place.

Hiring process

Salary and employment terms in accordance with applicable collective agreement. Employment is conditioned by a satisfactory child protection certificate and a satisfactory authorization.
