About the job
Permanent position and a vacancy as an island midwife on Samsø.
From December 1, 2026 we are seeking a midwife for a permanent full-time position on Samsø and a midwife for a fixed-term contract until September 30, 2027; the fixed-term is, as a rule, full-time.
Do you want to be part of the wonderful island life and an exciting workplace at Samsø and Aarhus University Hospital? The midwives are based at the Health and Emergency Building on Samsø, where there is close contact with the district nurse and island doctors.
Samsø is served by two midwives employed by the Department of Gynecology and Births at Aarhus University Hospital (AUH), but they work most hours on Samsø. There is always one midwife on duty and present on the island. The work is distributed with one on-call week on the island and one free week, during which 1-2 shifts are scheduled at the labour ward at AUH. The midwives themselves agree on the division of on-call weeks and holidays.
There are 20-25 pregnant residents of Samsø per year, and there are referrals so that only low-risk women can give birth on the island. All births on Samsø are considered home births and take place at the birth ward in the Health and Emergency Building on Samsø or in the woman6s home.
Tasks and areas
Samsø Midwifery Centre and Birth Ward arrangement is an offering to families who want proximity, familiar surroundings and continuity combined with a high professional quality in midwifery work.
The midwives are responsible for
- pregnancy examinations and birth preparation on Samsø
- birth assistance on Samsø as well as acute supervision and transfer by ferry or helicopter
- daily contact to ambulant laboring patients from the labour ward at AUH
- postnatal package and breastfeeding counseling as well as breastfeeding help at home
- the negotiations for a new collaboration agreement on Samsø are currently underway, so the final tasks are not in place yet, but will include about 22 hours in the on-call week.
Competencies
We expect you to be professionally well-founded and engaged in your profession. Preferably experience with home births and competencies from independent work, teamwork, and other healthcare work with a focus on counseling.
Personal qualifications
Since you are alone on call, you must be robust personally and professionally, and you must be able to engage in cross-disciplinary collaboration forums both internally in the Health and Emergency Building/Health Department as well as with external partners. You have a clear view of obstetric complications and emergencies while at the same time creating trust and security for the couples. You thrive with independent task solving and have an interest in primary health tasks in interaction with the municipality and other actors.
Prerequisites
You must live on Samsø during your on-call week, which consists of seven consecutive 24-hour shifts with on-call at home.
Leadership of the midwifery function and planning of other tasks
The management of the midwifery function is incumbent on Chief Midwife Marianne Raundal and Deputy Chief Midwife Sidsel Sandgaard. The planning of other tasks in the on-call week is being clarified and will be described and introduced as soon as they are in place.
Further information
Deputy Chief Midwife Sidsel Sandgaard at tel. 2128 2754 or Chief Midwife Marianne Raundal at tel. 3071 4888.
Employment process
Salary and employment terms in accordance with the applicable collective agreement. The employment is conditional on a satisfactory criminal record check and a satisfactory authorization/license.
The application deadline is October 19, 2026, and interviews will be held on October 22, 2026.
The position is, as a rule, a full-time position.
