About the job
Museum Director for Qaqortoq Museum
Kujalleq Municipality seeks an engaged and development-oriented museum director for Qaqortoq Museum.
Are you passionate about museology, cultural heritage and communication, and would you like to lead a museum with a strong local anchor, great development potential and many collaboration opportunities? Then perhaps you are the one we are looking for.
The position is available for immediate filling or after agreement.
About Qaqortoq Museum
Qaqortoq Museum is a recognised museum operating within the framework of the Museum Act and the Archives Act.
The museum’s purpose is to contribute to safeguarding the Greenlandic cultural heritage through registration, collection, preservation, research and dissemination of the area’s cultural-historical development and Greenlandic natural history, cf. Inatsisartut Act no. 8 of 3 June 2015 on the museum system.
The museum’s building stock consists of five protected buildings. Of these, three are used for exhibitions, while the remaining facilities include offices, a school service room and rooms for registration and storage.
The museum has in recent years on average received around 50 cruise ships per year, which gives the museum a significant contact surface to visitors from both Greenland and abroad and good opportunities to develop the museum’s dissemination and collaboration with tourism actors.
About the position
As museum director you will have the overall responsibility for the museum’s daily operations, administration, finances and professional development.
You will lead a small team of hourly-paid staff, typically 2-4 employees, where you are responsible for planning, coordinating and delegating tasks and ensuring a good and efficient task execution.
The position is autonomous and provides good opportunities to shape your own professional imprint on the museum’s continued development within the set framework.
Your tasks will include, among others, to
- have responsibility for the museum’s daily operations, administration and budget
- undertake the professional museum leadership and coordination of staff
- ensure that the museum’s work meets the professional pillars of the Museum Act
- supervise and ensure proper preservation of the museum’s collections and buildings
- develop and qualify the museum’s exhibitions and dissemination

A position with development opportunities
Qaqortoq Museum is in an exciting development phase, where several major areas need to be developed further. This includes, among other things, the education service, the stores, the registration work and the museum’s exhibitions.
As museum director you will therefore not only have responsibility for daily operations but also the opportunity to shape the museum’s future and create new projects and activities.
The museum has close collaboration with the other museums of Kujalleq Municipality, which provides good opportunities for professional sparring and joint development.
The museum is also a member of NUKAKA – The Association of Museums in Greenland. Through this network there are opportunities for professional exchange, physical meetings and smaller courses. Greenland’s National Museum is also a member of NUKAKA.
Organisationally the museum falls under the Department of Culture and Leisure, where there are good opportunities to develop projects and collaborate across the municipality’s departments.
We expect that you
- have a relevant educational background and experience within the museum sector

- have experience with leadership, project development and coordination
- can create structure, prioritise tasks and follow projects to a secure conclusion
