About the job
Skilled trades-educated operations worker for Christiansø Administration
Do you have a technical vocational background as a mechanic, electrician or similar? Do you thrive in a daily life with varying tasks, and can you see yourself as a key figure in an autonomous island community where your knowledge is essential to keep the wheels turning? Then this position as an operations worker on Christiansø might be just right for you.
About us
Christiansø is a small island with about 90 residents, owned by the Ministry of Defence and under state administration. The island employs about 20 staff, including a doctor, home helpers, craftspeople and a group of casually employed people for seasonal tasks. In addition, we have a school that is the island’s lifeblood, where the island’s children can receive education from the island’s five teachers.
You will be part of the operations department with 4 colleagues and part of a craft group totaling 10 colleagues. Together you are responsible for maintaining infrastructure and the island’s many buildings, fortifications and nature.
You report to the island’s deputy head Christian Bøgelund Christiansen, who tells the following about the workplace:
”Here on the island we produce our own power, electricity and water directly from the surrounding sea. We do not compromise on the quality of our solutions, even if it is often more time-consuming. We prioritise preserving and reusing our existing buildings and resources, and our focus is always on finding the most environmentally friendly and efficient solution.”
The job
As an operations worker you are an important part of our operation team, where your tasks span a wide range and challenge your technical skills. You are one of the keys to keeping Christiansø’s supplies of power, heat and water in optimal operation. The operations staff maintain machines and ensure that renovation is correctly transported to the harbour and further by boat to the mainland. At the same time you are the one who steps in when rental housing needs your help – whether it’s to make a faulty radiator work or to combat slippery conditions when winter hits.
Electrician and operations worker, Erik Christensen, tells about working in the on-call rotation:
”Since we on the island take care of all practical tasks, many of our tasks are far from our normal areas of expertise. But we are good at, together, finding a solution to most challenges we meet. With sometimes creative solutions.”
You will become part of the island’s emergency preparedness, where we ensure your professional training so you acquire the necessary skills.
Examples of tasks in the on-call rotation
- Service of diesel engines in the combined heat and power plant
- Renovation work
- Assist during berthing and departure of the freight boat.
- Receive and dispatch goods by freight boat.
- Service of heating and water installations
- Maintenance tasks on the island’s leaseholds etc.
- Assist in the island’s emergency preparedness
We do not expect you to master all tasks from the start, and we will of course ensure that you are trained in the island’s many duties. In addition we give you the opportunity to broaden your professional qualifications and regularly visit the mainland to participate in professional courses or exchange experiences with other professionals within your field.
You have a significant influence on your own role and the opportunity to shape your tasks to fit your professional abilities and interests. You are in close dialogue with your supervisor to ensure you are on the right track, but otherwise there is great freedom to manage your own workday.
Why choose us?
Island life is more than just a job. Here you and your family will be warmly welcomed and experience the friendly and close atmosphere that characterises our community. On Christiansø we value intimate values and often meet each other both at the shop and at the island’s many social events.
Through our development plan for Christiansø we actively work to ensure a vibrant community on Christiansø with attractive and sustainable living conditions and experiences for the island’s residents and guests.
Together with your family you have here a unique chance to step out of the hamster wheel and a hectic daily life. With less than a 5-minute walk to work you have time to enjoy lunch at home with your family and, with the low taxation, a full-time position offers the family financial stability from only one income. We provide a suitable rental housing so you can feel at home from day one.
About you
We value people who thrive with versatility and change, and since daily life on Christiansø brings new challenges, we are looking for you who thrive in navigating them smoothly. Living on the island requires a special type of person – someone who enjoys the calm in winter and the activity in summer. Here on the island life is characterised by simplicity in everyday life, which leaves room for interests and close bonds in the local community.
You probably have experience working with technical systems through a vocational education such as mechanic, electrician, plumbing or other trade qualification. You may also be a recent graduate who is prepared to develop yourself.
You like to dive into varied tasks and take on the different assignments that meet you. Whether it’s solving technical problems or exploring new fields, you keep a level head and your curiosity sharp. You enjoy the excitement of facing the unknown and using your skills to find durable, creative solutions.
Perhaps you have a family with children of school age or on the way. Our small school is the heart of our island, and we are glad to see the school grow with new pupils. There is also an option for private care for the youngest, where a private offering exists on the island. So if you and your family are looking for a change where you can be part of a close community and contribute to its growth and development, Christiansø might be the perfect place for you.
Employment terms
Employment and remuneration are in accordance with the applicable state agreement, and in connection with the recruitment there is an option to negotiate qualification supplements based on experience and competencies. In addition, there is an employer-funded pension scheme.
The position is a full-time job of 37 hours per week.
There is a service rental apartment tied to the position.
As an employee in the Ministry of Defence’s organisation you are subject to certain conditions. You must, among other things, be security cleared and maintain the security clearance throughout the employment process.

About the Ertholmene
Ertholmene – commonly known as Christiansø – is Denmark’s easternmost island group located 18 kilometres northeast of Bornholm. Two of the islands (Christiansø and Frederiksø) are inhabited. There are currently about 100 permanent residents. The islands are not part of the municipal structure, as they are owned by the state and fall under the Ministry of Defence, which has appointed an administrator to be both the head of the overall operation and to handle a range of authorities tasks.
Originally the islands were a sea fortress and later a fishing community, but today they are primarily an attraction visited by about 50,000 tourists each summer. This gives us who live here a quite significant hosting role. The majority of the residents who have jobs are craftsmen employed under Christiansø Administration to maintain facilities, the protected buildings, the unique nature and the old fortifications.
