Re-advertisement: Manager for Aarhus Winter Shelter sought for the 2026–2027 season

Subject to (expected) funding from the Social- og Boligstyrelsen, Aarhus Winter Shelter is seeking a new leader. You are a robust enthusiast with a strong network who is passionate about working with socially vulnerable citizens. As leader you will have the overall responsibility for leadership and operation of the shelter in the opening season, which is 15 November to 31 March. The position is fixed-term with employment from 1 November 2026 (or as soon as possible) – 31 March 2027.

There is a possibility for re-employment in subsequent opening seasons. The scope of work can be negotiated in a flexible arrangement from 1/2 time to full time.

Aarhus Winter Shelter is an emergency shelter aimed at homeless people and is used mainly by migrants. The shelter offers overnight accommodation and a light meal. Aarhus Winter Shelter is open daily in the time window 20.30-08.00 from mid-November to the end of March. The goal is that no one should sleep on the streets during the cold winter months.

The shelter is established in a collaboration between the Church of Denmark in Aarhus, the Red Cross, Kirkens Korshær, Blå Kors Denmark and Aarhus Municipality. The winter shelter is run by around 50 volunteers and a few staff, of whom one is the shelter's daily leader.

Leader's responsibilities and tasks

• Recruit, retain, lead and administer about 50 volunteers and 3-4 part-time staff.
• Coordinate procurement and building operation
• Shift scheduling
• Contribute to administration and financial management in cooperation with Blå Kors
• Volunteer and staff welfare – take the initiative for events for volunteers and staff with a view to retaining and strengthening the community.
• Holding staff meetings.
• Represent Aarhus Winter Shelter externally, including external communication, press coverage, Facebook etc.
• Cooperation with other relevant services and partners in the city
• Participation in steering group meetings

Organisation

The overall management responsibility for the operation of Aarhus Winter Shelter is held by a steering group consisting of a representative from each of the four organisations. The steering group also includes

• The shelter's leader and a representative for the staff
• A consultant from Aarhus Municipality (secretary of the steering group)
• A representative from the street-level outreach workers in Aarhus Municipality
• As needed: a representative from East Jutland Police

Economy and administration

The steering group has overall responsibility for the Winter Shelter's finances, which are discussed and approved at the steering group meetings.

Personnel administration, accounting, payroll and financial follow-up are handled by Blå Kors in collaboration with the steering group chair and the Winter Shelter's leader.

All volunteers have entered into volunteer agreements with the Red Cross.
