About the job

Senior physician with responsibility for patients with vascular liver diseases at the Department of Hepatology, Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Diseases, Aarhus University Hospital

At the Department of Hepatology, Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Diseases, Aarhus University Hospital there is a vacancy for a chief physician to be filled from 1 December 2026.

As a hepatology chief physician you will have responsibility for patients with complicated portal hypertension, other vascular liver diseases as well as liver failure. You will also be responsible for hepatology-gastroenterology patients in intensive care in close cooperation with intensivists.

The Department of Hepatology, Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Diseases (LMT) is an internal medicine department with highly specialized functions and regional functions within Internal Medicine: Hepatology and Gastroenterology. Patients with advanced liver disease, primary liver cancer, liver transplant recipients, neuroendocrine tumors, intestinal failure and complicated inflammatory bowel disease make up the majority of patients.

There is also a large outpatient activity in the LMT Clinic with 19,000 annual visits and more than 20,000 virtual contacts. 'Research-based effort against disease' is one of the main cornerstones of patient care.

Job description

You will become the department’s expert in vascular complications of liver disease, including portal hypertension and thromboses in mesenterial vessels. You will be responsible for liver-vein catheterisation and transjugular liver biopsy. You will be part of the liver transplantation team, which handles evaluation of patients for and treatment after liver transplantation.

Experience from transplantation centers in Denmark and abroad would be an advantage, just as familiarity with transjugular liver biopsy and liver-vein catheterisation is considered a prerequisite.

Primary liver cancer and neuroendocrine tumors are among the department’s highly specialized treatments, which means you will collaborate across specialties and participate in MDT conferences.

You will lead the ongoing rational development of patient pathways such as a “cirrhosis clinic” with a view to transitions to the primary sector in line with the intention of the “citizen-centered university hospital” as the health reform prescribes.

LMT aims to be an attractive workplace with a high professional level as the basis for a fruitful educational environment, where staff from all professional groups feel valued. You as a person are approachable and engaged.

Denmark’s complete hospital

AUH is an internationally recognized and highly specialized university hospital, which at the same time is the emergency hospital for 362,000 residents in Aarhus. We are located in one hospital city with 12,000 employees who collaborate in strong communities across professions and departments. We are the country’s complete hospital with both broad and the highest professional standards, where we meet the whole person and achieve results through collaboration.

We conduct research in close collaboration with Aarhus University and with regional, national, and international partners. AUH is the only Danish hospital that is a member of the European Hospital Alliance (EUHA), and the hospital is also a member of 19 European networks for rare diseases (ERN).

In these years we are particularly focused on developing the hospital for tomorrow’s reality, where AUH must contribute to coherence in the health system by taking responsibility for a larger number of patients while we have fewer employees to carry out the tasks.

LMT has around 150 employees distributed across different professional groups, including 18 chief physicians. The ward is characterized by a high flow of both highly specialized patients with liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal failure, neuroendocrine tumors, hepatocellular carcinoma and liver transplant recipients.
