About the job

Can you take an unclear need from a client and transform it into software that works? Do you code in Rust, TypeScript, or Python, and do you think in terms of platforms rather than single solutions? Then we would like to have you join us to build the software that translates AI into operational defense capability, among other things on Denmark's national AI supercomputer, Gefion.

About us

AI is already redefining the boundaries of society, security policy, and military task execution. The future battlefield will increasingly be characterized by data, autonomy, and faster decision-making processes. The Danish Defence AI Centre (FAIC) is established as a new unit within the Defence Command to ensure that AI is translated into real Danish and allied defense capability.

FAIC sets the direction for the Defence's use of AI - from doctrine to operational reality. We build institutional competence, enter partnerships with NATO, allies, academia, and industry, and define the operational needs and principles from which Defence AI solutions are developed and procured - in close collaboration with the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (FMI), so procurements and deliveries are based on soldiers’ needs and the Defence’s core mission.

Our collaboration with Gefion, Denmark's national AI supercomputer, demonstrates the way we work: open environments provide learning and speed, while closed frameworks ensure military applicability where security, classification, and operational relevance are decisive.

FAIC is the place where the Defence AI future is shaped. We are looking for experienced profiles who want to be part of it from day one.

The position

As a Senior Developer at the Defence AI Centre you will develop software that takes AI from idea to operational use. You take responsibility for the entire development process – from the dialogue with the customer and the first prototype to finished software in operation on the Defence’s classified network.

You will primarily work in Rust, TypeScript and Python and develop everything from performance-critical components and intuitive user interfaces to AI integrations and solutions that utilize GPU resources on Gefion. At the same time you think across projects and build reusable components and services that make it easier for other teams to build further on the AI Centre’s platform. You set the technical direction, ensure high quality and translate complex needs into solutions that work in practice.

The role is for you if you are passionate about software development, enjoy dialog with customers and users, and take initiative and ownership – even when the task is not yet clearly defined.

Your main tasks will be

Software development

You develop, test and maintain production-ready software for AI solutions and take responsibility for technically complex tasks. With Rust, TypeScript and Python you build everything from performance- and security-critical components to APIs, services, user interfaces and integrations with language models, agents and ML models. You also contribute to the technical direction and set high standards for code quality.

Ownership and customer dialogue

You drive development from the first customer dialogue to the solution being in operation. In collaboration with operational units and staffs you identify needs and translate them into concrete solutions – also when the problem is unclear, and the path forward requires independent decisions. You demonstrate solutions to customers, users and management and align expectations regarding possibilities, timelines and technical limitations.

Platform thinking

You design modular, testable software architecture and APIs that can be reused across projects. You develop common components, libraries and services for data and model access, authentication and logging, as well as contribute to templates and standardized development processes that make it easy to build secure solutions. In close collaboration with platform engineers you ensure that the software works together with the underlying infrastructure and is scalable, observable and easy to operate.

AI and high-performance computing

You develop software that efficiently utilizes HPC- and GPU-resources on Gefion and the AI Centre’s other compute platforms. This includes job execution, data pipelines, scaling of AI workloads, inference services and tools for evaluation and validation of models. You also build robust data pipelines capable of handling large and diverse data, including sensor, image and text data.

Quality and delivery

You ensure high code quality through code reviews, automated tests, static analysis and common coding standards. You work with CI/CD and containerization so that software can be delivered efficiently and traceably from development to classified operations environments. You deliver continuously functioning software in short iterations and use AI-assisted and agentic software development responsibly, while also contributing to the development of good practices in the field.

Security and accreditation

You think security in from the start and develop according to secure-by-design principles with a focus on memory safety, dependency management and security in the software supply chain. You continuously document the technical solutions and contribute the necessary basis for accreditation so that security requirements can be handled in parallel with development. You also ensure that the software can operate in the Defence’s isolated environments, including air-gapped environments.

Collaboration and professional development

You join cross-disciplinary teams with platform engineers, data scientists, operational users, FMI and external partners, where you contribute with technical sparring and translate various professional domains into well-functioning solutions. You help develop other programmers through professional sparring and mentoring and contribute to building a strong development culture in the AI Centre.

In addition you prepare technical analyses and recommendations on architecture and technology choices, follow the international developments within software and AI – including among allies – and assess how new technologies can create value for the Defence.

We offer a job with great influence, where you help build Defence AI software from the ground up, work with modern technology and one of Europe’s most powerful AI supercomputers, and see your code make a real difference for the Defence’s mission.

About you

You have a higher education in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering or a similar technical field – or relevant professional experience. You have several years of professional experience with software development and delivering software to production. You are strong in at least one of the programming languages Rust, TypeScript or Python and are keen to develop your skills in the others.

You have experience with software architecture, API design, automated tests, code reviews, Git, CI/CD and containerization, e.g. Docker. You work independently, take ownership and translate unclear needs into concrete solutions without requiring close supervision. At the same time you thrive in dialog with customers and users, can identify their needs and communicate technical choices so that different professional groups can follow. You master Danish and English in a professional context.

It is an advantage, but not a requirement, if you also have experience with one or more of the following areas:

  • Platform development: Reusable components, common services, Kubernetes or internal developer platforms.
  • AI and language models: Integration of AI models into applications, including AI-assisted or agentic software development.
  • GPU and high-performance computing: GPU- and HPC environments or inference frameworks such as Slurm, CUDA, PyTorch or vLLM.
  • Customer-facing roles: Software development in the consulting industry, advisory or product development with direct customer contact.
  • Defence and authorities: Development in a defence, intelligence or government context, including work in classified or isolated environments.
  • System-near development: Embedded and edge solutions or development close to hardware, e.g. for sensors, drones or tactical networks.
  • Security and accreditation: Secure-by-design principles and accreditation processes, including NATO 314 and FKOBST 358-1.

Employment terms

You are employed under the applicable collective agreement at any given time.

Qualifications and functional allowances are negotiated based on relevant experience and competences. In addition, there is an employer-financed pension scheme attached to the position.

The workplace is in Lyngby.

As an employee under the Defence Ministry’s authority you are subject to certain special terms. You must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance throughout the employment.

As an employee you are obliged to perform service outside the country’s borders, including at units in international operations with a view to participation in conflict prevention, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, humanitarian and other similar operations.

About the Defence AI Centre

AI is redefining both the battlefield and the way the Defence creates and uses combat power. AI shortens the path from observation to decision and effect and opens up task solutions that were not previously possible. AI is not something that simply supports the Defence’s operations — AI helps define them. That is why AI has a central place in the Defence, and that is why the Defence AI Centre (FAIC) is established as a new unit within the Defence Command.

FAIC sets the direction for how the Defence uses AI, so investments are translated into real Danish and allied defense capability. We prioritize operational needs across services and commands in close dialogue with operators, and we build partnerships with NATO, allies, academia and industry. Our task is to ensure that AI becomes combat power — not technology for technology’s sake.

We work AI-first and innovatively enough to change us while reality changes. This means short cycles, close to the operator, and pace and learning as operational requirements. We develop in open environments to gain speed and insight, and we take solutions into operation in classified environments where security and operational relevance are decisive. We have access to some of the Nordics’ best computing, and our infrastructure is built so that AI is part of the solution from the start.

The Defence AI Centre is the place where the Defence’s AI future is formed.
