About the job

Can you take an unclear need from a customer and transform it into software that works? Do you code in Rust, TypeScript, or Python, and think platform rather than single solutions? Then we would like you to help build the software that translates AI into operational defensive capability, including on Denmark's national AI supercomputer, Gefion.

About us

AI is already changing the framework for society, security policy, and military task execution. The future battlefield will increasingly be characterized by data, autonomy, and faster decision-making processes. The Danish Defence AI Center (FAIC) is established as a new unit within the Defence Command to ensure that AI is translated into real Danish and allied defense capability.

FAIC sets the direction for the Defence's use of AI - from doctrine to operational reality. We build institutional competence, enter into partnerships with NATO, allies, academia, and industry, and define the operational needs and principles that Defence AI solutions are developed and procured from - in close collaboration with the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (FMI), so procurements and deliveries are based on soldiers' needs and the Defence's core tasks.

Our collaboration with Gefion, Denmark's national AI supercomputer, demonstrates the working method: open environments enable learning and speed, while closed frameworks ensure military applicability where security, classification, and operational relevance are decisive.

FAIC is the place where the Defence's AI future is shaped. We seek experienced profiles who want to join from day one.

About the position

As a Senior Developer at the Danish Defence AI Center you develop software that takes AI from idea to operational use. You take responsibility for the entire development process – from dialogue with the customer and the first prototype to production-ready software running on the Defence's classified network.

You primarily work in Rust, TypeScript, and Python and develop everything from performance-critical components and intuitive user interfaces to AI integrations and solutions that utilize the GPU resources on Gefion. At the same time you think across projects and build reusable components and services that make it easier for other teams to build on the AI Center's platform. You set the technical direction, ensure high quality, and translate complex needs into solutions that work in practice.

The role is for you who are passionate about software development, enjoy dialogue with customers and users, and take initiative and ownership – even when the task is not yet clearly defined.

Your main responsibilities will be

Software development

You develop, test, and maintain production-ready software for AI solutions and take responsibility for technically complex tasks. With Rust, TypeScript, and Python you build everything from performance- and security-critical components to APIs, services, user interfaces and integrations with language models, agents, and ML models. You also contribute to the technical direction and set high standards for code quality.

Ownership and customer dialogue

You drive development processes from the first customer dialogue until the solution is in operation. In collaboration with operational units and staffs you identify needs and translate them into concrete solutions – even when the problem statement is unclear, and the way forward requires independent decisions. You demonstrate solutions to customers, users, and management and align expectations for possibilities, timelines, and technical limitations.

Platform thinking

You design modular, testable software architecture and APIs that can be reused across projects. You develop common components, libraries, and services for, among other things, data and model access, authentication, and logging, and contribute to templates and standardized development processes that make it easy to build secure solutions. In close collaboration with platform engineers you ensure that the software works with the underlying infrastructure and is scalable, observable, and easy to operate.

AI and high-performance computing

You develop software that efficiently utilizes HPC and GPU resources on Gefion and the AI Center's other compute platforms. This includes job execution, data pipelines, scaling of AI workloads, inference services, and tools for evaluation and validation of models. You also build robust data pipelines capable of handling large and diverse data sets, including sensor, image, and text data.

Quality and delivery

You ensure high code quality through code reviews, automated tests, static analysis, and shared coding standards. You work with CI/CD and containerization so software can be delivered efficiently and traceably from development to classified production environments. You deliver continuously functioning software in short iterations and use AI-assisted and agentic software development responsibly while contributing to the development of good practices in the field.

Security and accreditation

You embed security from the start and develop according to secure-by-design principles with a focus on memory safety, dependency management, and security in the software supply chain. You continuously document the technical solutions and contribute the necessary basis for accreditation so security requirements can be handled in parallel with development. You also ensure the software can operate in the Defence's isolated, including air-gapped, environments.

Collaboration and professional development

You join cross-disciplinary teams with platform engineers, data scientists, operational users, FMI, and external partners, where you contribute with technical sparring and translate different professionalities into well-functioning solutions. You help develop other programmers through professional sparring and mentoring and help build a strong development culture in the AI Center.

In addition you prepare technical analyses and recommendations on architecture and technology choices, follow international developments in software and AI – including among allies – and assess how new technologies can create value for the Defence.

We offer a job with great influence, where you help build the Defence's AI software from the ground up, work with modern technology and one of Europe's most powerful AI supercomputers, and see your code make a real difference for the Defence's mission.

About you

You have a higher education degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering or a similar technical field – or relevant professional experience. You have several years of professional experience with software development and delivering software to production. You are strong in at least one of the programming languages Rust, TypeScript or Python and are eager to develop your skills in the others.

You have experience with software architecture, API design, automated tests, code review, Git, CI/CD and containerization, e.g., Docker. You work independently, take ownership and translate unclear needs into concrete solutions without close supervision. At the same time you thrive in dialogue with customers and users, can identify their needs and communicate technical choices so that different professional groups can follow. You master both Danish and English in a professional context.

It is an advantage, but not a requirement, if you also have experience with one or more of the following areas:

  • Platform development: Reusable components, common services, Kubernetes or internal developer platforms.
  • AI and language models: Integration of AI models into applications, including AI-assisted or agentic software development.
  • GPU and high-performance computing: GPU- and HPC environments or inference frameworks such as Slurm, CUDA, PyTorch, or vLLM.
  • Customer-facing roles: Software development within the consulting industry, advisory or product development with direct customer contact.
  • Defense and government: Development in a defense, intelligence, or government context, including work in classified or isolated environments.
  • System-native development: Embedded and edge solutions or development close to hardware, e.g., for sensors, drones, or tactical networks.
  • Security and accreditation: Secure-by-design principles and accreditation processes, including NATO 314 and FKOBST 358-1.

Terms of employment

You are employed under the applicable collective agreement.

Qualification and role-based allowances are negotiated based on relevant experience and competencies. In addition, there is an employer-financed pension scheme linked to the position.

The workplace is in Lyngby.

As an employee within the Ministry of Defence, you are subject to certain special terms. You must, among other things, be security cleared and maintain the clearance throughout the employment.

You, as an employee, have a duty to render service outside the country, including at units in international operations with the aim of participating in conflict prevention, peacekeeping, peace enforcement, humanitarian and other similar operations.

About the Defence AI Center

AI is redefining both the battlefield and the way the Defence creates and uses combat power. AI shortens the path from observation to decision and effect and opens up task solutions that were not previously possible. AI is not something that merely supports the Defence's operations — AI helps define them. That is why AI has a central place in the Defence, and why the Defence AI Center (FAIC) is established as a new unit within the Defence Command.

FAIC sets the direction for how the Defence uses AI, so investments translate into real Danish and allied defense capability. We prioritize operational needs across services and commands in close dialogue with operators, and we build partnerships with NATO, allies, academia, and industry. Our task is to ensure that AI becomes combat power — not technology for technology's sake.

We work AI-first and innovatively enough to change ourselves while reality changes. That means short cycles, close to the operator, and tempo and learning as operational requirements. We develop in open environments to gain speed and insight, and we take solutions into operation in classified environments where security and operational relevance are decisive. We have access to some of the Nordic region's best computers, and our infrastructure is built so that AI is part of the solution from the start.

The Defence AI Center is the place where the Defence's AI future is shaped.
