About the job

Will you be as excited about shipping a software product as about seeing a green pipeline, would you rather write a tool than do the same thing twice, and do you want a voice when the Defence is building the infrastructure of the future?

-So we have a split role, classified networks, and a place for you.

About us

AI is already changing the boundaries of society, security policy, and military tasking. The future battlefield will increasingly be characterized by data, autonomy, and faster decision processes. The Danish Defence AI Center (FAIC) is established as a new unit under the Defence Command to ensure that AI is translated into real Danish and allied defense capability.

We set the direction for the Defence's use of AI - from doctrine to operational reality. We do this by building capabilities, collaborating with NATO, allies, academia, and industry, and in close cooperation with the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (FMI), so procurements and deliveries are anchored in the soldiers’ needs and the Defence’s core mission.

Our collaboration with Gefion, Denmark’s national AI supercomputer, demonstrates our approach: we exploit open environments to create learning and pace, while at the same time building the secure frameworks that make AI usable in a military reality.

FAIC is the place where the Defence's AI future is shaped. We are looking for experienced profiles who want to be part of it from day one.

The role

As a Senior Platform Engineer you do not have to choose between coding and running infrastructure. You develop software products that solve real tasks for the Defence’s users, while also building the platform that brings code and models from the first commit to secure operation on classified networks. You know what happens down to the hardware level, from GPUs and InfiniBand to power and cooling. You write infrastructure as code, build CI/CD and MLOps pipelines, and take ownership of your products all the way – following the principle you build it, you run it .

You work closely with the Gefion team, which operates Denmark’s national AI supercomputer, so the Defence Center’s developers can use the capacity safely and easily.

Security and documentation are built in from the start, so accreditation runs in parallel with development rather than slowing it down. And when the Defence undertakes large-scale projects, e.g. with Digital Backbone, you sit at the table as the one who can explain what works in practice, and why.

The role is for you who would rather write pull requests than recommendations to management, and who gets irritated by manual processes.

Your main tasks

  • Develop software and internal platform products: Build applications, services, APIs and developer tools from idea to operations, primarily in Python, Rust, TypeScript or Go. You take responsibility for the entire product lifecycle and make it easy for other developers to build and deliver good solutions.
  • Build and run AI infrastructure: Establish and further develop the FAIC’s development, testing, and production environments across classification levels. You work with container platforms, GPUs, high-speed networks and storage, and collaborate closely with the Gefion team and other compute partners to utilize capacity safely and effectively.
  • Automate development and deliveries: Build CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code and MLOps solutions that automate testing, security scanning, deployment and operations. You establish robust and traceable delivery paths from development environments to classified and isolated production environments and ensure that the solutions can be monitored and maintained.
  • Integrate security and accreditation: Build security into software, platform and delivery processes from the start. You work with access control, hardening, vulnerabilities and documentation and coordinate the technical part of accreditation so security and traceability requirements go hand in hand with development pace.
  • Advise on architecture and strategic choices: Contribute to the Defence’s larger infrastructure and digitalization projects, including Digital Backbone and DOT. You translate technical possibilities, risks and constraints into recommendations on architecture, technology and acquisitions – from the concrete platform to long-term choices of AI and compute infrastructure.
  • Create coherence across the organisation: Be a technical focal point between FAIC developers, the Cyber Division, FMI, the Gefion team and other partners. You contribute to architectural decisions and code reviews, share your knowledge and help set a technical direction that works in practice and in the Defence’s broader context.

We offer a job where you both build software products and the Defence’s AI platform from the ground up, work closely with the Gefion team, and gain real influence on how the Defence’s infrastructure will look in the coming years.

About you

We imagine you have a relevant technical education in fields such as computer science, software engineering, computer engineering or cybersecurity – or have built equivalent competencies through your professional experience. The most important thing is that you have a solid technical foundation and several years of software development experience combined with DevOps, platform engineering or site reliability engineering.

You have developed and delivered software in production and code fluently in at least one of the languages Python, Rust, TypeScript or Go. At the same time you have solid experience with Linux, containers, orchestration, CI/CD and infrastructure as code.

You understand how software, hardware and infrastructure fit together. You have experience designing or running cloud, on-premise or HPC environments and can relate to GPUs, networks, storage and the requirements for performance and secure operation. You do not need to be a specialist in all parts, but you must be able to understand the whole and make well-founded technical choices.

You also enjoy collaboration and advisory work. You can translate complex technical problems into clear recommendations, collaborate with different disciplines and take responsibility for the technical direction – also when the solution must work across organisations and security requirements.

It is an advantage if you have experience with MLOps, GPU clusters, DevSecOps or classified and isolated operating environments. Familiarity with the Defence’s IT and security architecture, accreditation, NATO standards or larger public infrastructure and defense programs is also relevant.

You master Danish and English in a professional context.

About the Danish Defence AI Center (FAIC)

AI is redefining both the battlefield and the way the Defence creates and uses firepower. AI shortens the path from observation to decision and effect and opens up task solutions that were not previously possible. AI is not something that merely supports the Defence’s operations — AI helps define them. This is why AI has a central place in the Defence, and why the Danish Defence AI Center (FAIC) is established as a new unit under the Defence Command.

FAIC sets the direction for how the Defence uses AI so that investments translate into real Danish and allied defense capability. We prioritise operational needs across services and commands in close dialogue with the operators, and we build partnerships with NATO, allies, academia and industry. Our task is to ensure that AI becomes combat power — not technology for technology’s sake.

We work AI-first and innovatively enough to change us while reality changes. That means short cycles, close to the operator, and pace and learning as operational requirements. We develop in open environments to gain speed and insight, and we take solutions into service in classified environments where security and operational relevance are critical. We have access to some of the Nordic region’s best computing, and our infrastructure is built so that AI is part of the solution from the start.

The Danish Defence AI Center is the place where the Defence’s AI future is shaped.
