About the job

Do you want to be a social work staff member at Joannahuset?

Joannahuset is looking for a new full-time social work staff member who will help keep the door open for children and young people in crisis.

Joannahuset is Denmark's only crisis center for children and young people under 18. Here, children and young people can reach out for help around the clock and receive counseling, care, shelter and legal aid.

We are looking for you who have strong child-focused professional and relational skills and can meet children and young people in situations that are often both acute and complex. You may be trained as a social worker or have an educational qualification with relevant experience.

You receive children who themselves reach out for help

As a social work staff member you have three shifts per week in the house, distributed over day, evening and weekend shifts. In addition, you participate in an arrangement with a couple of night backup shifts per month.

A very central role is to welcome children and young people when they ring the door and tell about violence, abuse or other forms of neglect. On average we receive a new child every other day.

We talk with the child about the situation they are in. Some children need an anonymous advisory conversation. Others need more concrete rights-based help, where you may, for example, have to collaborate with the child on contact with the municipality, obtain consent for shelter from custodians, or provide basic care and security.

It requires that you can build a relationship with a child in crisis while maintaining a professional overview in complex and acute situations. You must know the social system and be able to bridge the gap between the child and the authorities and professionals who can be part of the continued help.

Your daily life takes place in a house where many things happen at the same time: In one room a child may be in counseling, while another sits with a lawyer from legal aid. In the kitchen, food may be being prepared, someone is playing a game in the living room, and another child waits for the municipality to come back with a plan. Sometimes the task is to advise and act quickly. Other times it is to stay seated, make a toast, fetch a game, or otherwise make the waiting time a little easier.

You will become part of an advisory team. Joannahuset runs continuously 40–50 advisory cases with children and young people who come by for ongoing counseling, help to bring their perspectives into their case through reports or advocacy at meetings with the municipality.

We are looking for someone who

  • has a relevant child-focused education, e.g. as a social worker or educator
  • has strong relational skills and can establish contact with children and young people in difficult life situations
  • has solid social work judgment and understanding of the municipal system and the rights of children and young people
  • can stay calm in acute and complex situations and take professional responsibility
  • can collaborate with children and young people on the changes they themselves want in their lives
  • enjoys close professional collaboration and bringing their own and others' perspectives into play
  • can work day, evening and weekend

Part of a house with high professional standards

In Joannahuset you become part of a cross-disciplinary house with child-focused staff, lawyers, students and volunteers, who together work so that children and young people can reach out for help around the clock.

As an employee you become part of a practice where professionalism is developed close to the children and in ongoing sparring with colleagues. We work from the new view of childhood and co-create with children and young people, and we emphasize joint reflection and a culture where we dare to challenge each other's perspectives and grow wiser together.
