About the job

Study internship in municipal planning: Be part of shaping future Aarhus

Do you want to test your mettle with the big questions about how Aarhus Municipality should develop? How do we plan new urban areas? Where should future housing and business be located? How do we create room for renewable energy and at the same time protect the landscape? And how do we ensure good development opportunities for the municipality's rural villages?

As an intern in Municipal Planning you will have the opportunity to translate your academic knowledge from studies into concrete planning tasks and be where the long-term decisions about the municipality's physical development are made.

If you are studying to be an architect, engineer, urban designer, land surveyor, geographer or another relevant education, and you want to work with strategic planning in practice, the internship might be for you.

About the internship

As an intern you will become part of Municipal Planning and have the opportunity to work with different scales and issues. It can range from the development of a single local area or a rural village to strategic planning for new urban areas and the entire Aarhus Municipality.

Depending on the current projects and your competences you may for example work with

  • strategic planning for new urban areas
  • planning strategy and municipal planning
  • concept sketches for the municipality's rural villages
  • planning for renewable energy installations
  • landscape planning
  • housing, business and retail planning
  • cultural environment and SAVE-registration.

You will not be left alone with the tasks. We ensure a good introduction to our working methods and tools, and you will get a mentor who follows you through the internship and helps connect your tasks to your education, your interests and your competences.

What your day will look like

You will become part of our interdisciplinary department Municipal Planning, which consists of 16 dedicated employees with different professional backgrounds.

We work with some of the overarching questions about how Aarhus Municipality should develop in the long term, and our tasks span broadly.

Many of our projects cross disciplines. You will therefore have the opportunity to collaborate and spar with among others architects, planners, landscape architects, engineers and other professional specialists in Technology and Environment.

You will thus gain a good insight into how physical planning takes place in practice, and how professional analyses, political decisions, legislation and different interests come together in the development of a municipality.

Many of our tasks are solved in collaboration with other departments, and you can therefore look forward to sparring with colleagues and skilled professional specialists in the rest of the organization.

There is a non-paid internship for about 6 months, where you will have a weekly work time of about 30-37 hours as a starting point. There is the possibility for flexible working hours, and we take study activities into account. As an intern in the Municipal Planning department you become part of Technology and Environment, which has headquarters in the Blixens office building in Brabrand near Aarhus.

We imagine that you..

  • are in the process of a education as architect, engineer, land surveyor, geographer or similar and you want to try working in a politically led organization
  • are professionally curious, want to translate theory into practice and you are interested in urban development, landscapes and strategic planning on a large scale.
  • can communicate your thoughts both orally, in writing and visually and that you speak and write fluent Danish
  • have experience with relevant digital drawing and visualization tools
  • thrive with collaboration and cross-disciplinary sparring and want to contribute with new perspectives, ideas and professional curiosity.

We do not expect you to know everything in advance. The most important thing is that you are curious, engaged and eager to learn.

Practical information

The internship is unpaid and lasts about 6 months with a weekly work time of about 30-37 hours. There is the possibility for flexible working hours, and we take relevant study activities into account.

Your workplace will be with Technology and Environment in Blixens in Brabrand, where Municipal Planning is based.
