About the job

Would you like to help educate the future diploma engineers in construction and civil engineering, where structures, sustainability and energy optimization are considered together from the first semester? At Campus AAU Esbjerg you will play a central role in teaching, guidance and coordination in the Civil and Architectural Engineering program in a close professional environment with short lines between teachers and students. The position is a permanent full-time appointment with commencement on 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Your responsibilities

As a Senior Lecturer in Building Constructions you will be a key person in the development of the Civil Engineering education at Campus AAU Esbjerg. The program is anchored in the Department of Energy, and you will therefore be part of a professional environment where construction, energy, climate and sustainability are integrated across course activities and project modules. The Civil Engineering program in Esbjerg enables students to work both experimentally and digitally, including with numerical calculations such as FEM.

A substantial part of your daily work will consist of supervising diploma engineering students in the Civil Engineering program from the first to the seventh semester. You will follow classes and project groups closely, provide academic and methodological sparring, and help students connect theory about structures, materials and loads to concrete engineering projects. The supervision includes both the general development of the students' engineering professional judgment and work with specific problems within building structures in concrete, steel and timber.

The position also includes professional responsibility in relation to the structural engineering profile, where work is done with static checks of multi-storey buildings, steel structures, concrete structures and timber structures. You will contribute to ensuring that students learn to plan and document static calculations in accordance with relevant standards and norms, and you will participate in the dialogue on how sustainability, climate considerations and energy optimization are incorporated into the design of building structures.

A central part of the job is coordination across the semesters of the program. You help create coherence between course activities, project work and internships, so the program's academic progression is clear to both students and teachers. This includes semester planning, ongoing follow-up in the semester program and collaboration with colleagues on adjustments and development initiatives.

In addition, you will be responsible for internship coordination, where you contribute to dialogue between the program, the students and the companies about the content of internships and the interaction between internship and the rest of the study.

Depending on your academic profile, there may also be classroom instructions in central courses within construction, for example statics and strength of materials at both fundamental and advanced levels, courses in load and safety, building materials, concrete technology and construction, as well as topics related to prestressed concrete, element construction and temporary structures. Here you will work to create coherence between analytical calculations, material understanding and the practical conditions that structural engineers encounter in practice.

If you have interest and documented experience within research areas related to construction and risk-based approaches, there could be a link to research activities. This could include topics such as robustness and resilience in the built environment, risk-based operation and maintenance, interaction between life cycle assessment, economy and “resilience,” or more specific issues related to structures, climate and energy supply. The extent of this will depend on your profile and the institute’s needs.

Your competencies

You have a background as a building engineer at master's level or civil engineer level, or you can otherwise demonstrate a professional depth corresponding to this. You have solid experience as a structural engineer with static documentation of building structures, and you are used to working systematically with norms, standards and design documentation. It is important that you can document several years of relevant experience with static documentation, typically equivalent to work at the level of a structural engineer in structural class 2.

You have several years of experience with static calculations, including determination of loads and load paths, limit state calculations and documentation of either multi-storey buildings or bridge structures. You can work independently with building calculation models and documentation of results, and you are comfortable translating complex technical requirements into robust and understandable solutions.

If you have experience with concrete technology and limit state calculations in concrete, that will be a clear advantage. The same applies to experience with wood technology and calculations in timber, as well as any experience with foundation calculations and use of geotechnical investigations.

Knowledge of and use of methods based on FEM in connection with static documentation of multi-storey buildings or bridge structures will be highly relevant to the position. You are comfortable using digital calculation tools as an integrated part of your work and can help students understand both opportunities and limitations of such tools. At the same time, you have an interest in how sustainability, climate considerations and energy optimization can be incorporated as natural parameters in the design of building structures.

It is a condition of the position that you can teach, supervise and examine in Danish. You can convey complex technical issues in a way that enables students to build both understanding and confidence in the subject, and you are curious about how teaching, exercises and projects can be developed to reflect engineering practice.

As a person you thrive on close contact with students and colleagues, and you want to take overall responsibility for teaching programs, semester coordination and internships. You work in a structured way and can create an overview across courses, projects and cohorts, and you follow up tasks through to completion in an environment with many parallel activities. You contribute constructively to collaboration in the local professional environment and are willing to share knowledge and experience so that the education and students’ learning can continuously develop.

Who are we

You will become part of the Civil Engineering program at Campus AAU Esbjerg, which is anchored in the Department of Energy at Aalborg University. The program is characterized by a close and manageable study environment, where students and teachers are in close contact, and where there are good opportunities for ongoing dialogue about both the academic content and the organization of the teaching.

In the local environment you will be part of collaboration with colleagues who have experience from practice and from the university world, and who share a focus on educating engineers who can solve concrete challenges in the building sector.

The environment at Campus AAU Esbjerg is characterized by close cooperation between different programs and research areas within energy, construction and related technical fields. This provides good opportunities to draw on experiences and perspectives across disciplines, and to develop teaching programs where students work on problems that cross traditional subject boundaries. The program continually works to involve experiments, laboratory activities and digitalization in teaching.

As an employee at Campus AAU Esbjerg you will have a work life with a focus on both quality in teaching and on a sustainable working life for staff. The planning of teaching and guidance is done with a view to creating coherence between course activities, project work and periods of preparation, so that in the less teaching-intensive periods there can also be opportunities for concentrated deepening in the development of teaching or other tasks.

You will also become part of Aalborg University as a whole, where there is access to pedagogical upskilling, associate professor pathways and collegial sparring across campuses and institutes.
