About the job
We are seeking a nurse in Herning/Nykøbing Mors prison as part of a reorganization and staffing increase. The increase is in connection with increased focus on health and interventions for vulnerable and at-risk inmates in light of the new sentencing reform.
The position is initially 37 hours per week, and it is expected to be filled on January 1, 2027 or by agreement.
About the workplace
As a employed prison nurse, you will be based under the Health Unit in the District Office in the Western Prison District with primary place of service at Randers Prison.
In collaboration with your experienced nurse colleague in the prison, a doctor and a psychiatrist, you will be responsible for carrying out the health care services for the inmates.
We offer somewhat different frameworks, where a key competence for you will be the ability to collaborate positively in a multidisciplinary environment with prison guards, nurse colleagues, doctors, psychiatrists, external partners such as hospitals and addiction centers.
The Health Unit provides health services at a level comparable to general practice - with a special focus on complexity, social vulnerability, addiction, mental distress and chronic disease.
The job as a prison nurse
The clinical tasks are very diverse and of varying complexity and are best compared to the workflow in a medical practice, as inmates come to the nurse clinic with issues they would otherwise have contacted their own doctor about.
It is essential in the job that you want to work with a patient group living in a prison environment who often have multifaceted, complex health issues of both physical, mental and social nature, often combined with compliance problems.
The staffing increase includes strengthening the professional efforts for vulnerable and at-risk individuals - for example through early detection, continuity, stable medication, emphasis on patient safety and close interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as a rehabilitative approach where we support the inmate’s self-care, coping and health competencies. This may include targeted guidance, motivational conversations and support to navigate treatment and appointments - also with a view to better sector transitions at release.
Prison nursing requires high professionalism as well as an empathetic, humane, inclusive and affirming approach, where it is often necessary to think outside the box within the given framework to solve tasks.
The nursing tasks include, among others
- Initial health interviews at intake with focus on screening for chronic and mental disorders.
- Independent nurse consultations based on the inmates’ somatic, mental and chronic problems, including advising on health-preserving conditions and self-care.
- Referral to, participation in, and follow-up on medical/psychiatry consultations.
- Planning, follow-up, monitoring and coordination of new and ongoing treatment courses of both acute and chronic nature, including performing ECG, LFU, wound care, vaccinations and similar clinical tasks.
- Management of medication dosing for the inmates on the premises.
- Acting as a health professional sparring partner for prison-related colleagues.
Who are you?
We are looking for a colleague whose professional toolset is in order, and who can also thrive in a dynamic and unusual environment with clear boundaries, but essentially a place and a nursing community with ambitions. We focus on quality, standardization of workflows, patient safety and competence development.
We especially emphasize the following criteria
- It is an unequivocal requirement that you have been trained as a nurse for several years.
- It is essential that you are professionally capable of quickly identifying, detecting and assessing nursing problems and acting independently on these.
- You must have a high degree of self-management, independence, a sense of responsibility and the ability to contribute positively to a small mono-disciplinary work community based on the principles of a self-managed team with distant leadership.
- You must be able to work in a structured way and focus on patient safety.
- You must have good collaboration skills with the ability to engage in problem-solving relationships, as cross-disciplinary collaboration with the prison’s other professional groups is of decisive importance in daily life.
- You are present and equipped with a friendly, calm, positive and humane view on life and are willing to invest in creating a good shared working environment with learning, job satisfaction, well-being and good collaboration relations at the forefront.
- You possess good pedagogical abilities and can communicate safely and clearly for guidance to both inmates and staff.
- You must have broad medical experience from, for example, acute/medical, addiction treatment, home care, psychiatry or social medical services.
- You should rest in your professional expertise and have an interest in a complex clinical field where somatic, psychiatry, addiction and social vulnerability often overlap.
Salary and employment terms
The appointment and remuneration are conducted in accordance with the general agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Union of Teachers and CO10, as well as the state nurses’ collective agreement and the new pay system agreement for civil servants and nurse employees in the state between CO10 and any local agreements. In addition, allowances may be agreed depending on experience and qualifications.
- The position is a permanent role with a weekly working time of 37 hours .
- The employment area is Denmark’s Prisons, and the primary place of service is the Nordjyllands arrest and supervision, Herning Prison, Østergade 9, 7400 Herning. In addition, you will also serve Nordjyllands arrest and supervision, Nykøbing Mors Prison, Tinghusvej 2, 7900 Nykøbing Mors.
- The position is to be filled by January 1, 2027 .
Note
There is a good opportunity to influence your own work time planning with reference to operations. Working hours are daytime, with fixed arrival after agreement at 7:30/8:00 and time off after agreement between 15:00/16:00.
Weekends and holidays are generally not worked.
You must be prepared for a combined position, where you also cover the primary nursing shift in Nykøbing Mors Prison.
We imagine there will be three days per week in Herning Prison and two days per week in Nykøbing Mors Prison.
A company car can be provided if needed for travel from Herning to Nykøbing Mors.
During vacations and in case of illness, you will be self-supporting on the campuses, with the Health Unit’s nurses available to cover for each other, and you may, by special agreement, be able to assist on nearby campuses.
