About the job

Do you want to help build the Defence's common data foundation and ensure that complex data and AI projects are carried out on a solid technical basis?

We are seeking a technical project manager who can be the technical driver on the customer side in some of the Defence's central data, AI and transformation projects. You will hold a key position between project management, architecture, engineering, AI expertise and suppliers - and you will help ensure that the Defence as a customer has the necessary technical insight to make the right decisions and challenge the solutions we are presented with.

Your first major task will be to work with the Defence's Corporate-wide Data Platform, but the role will over time work across our portfolio of data and AI initiatives.

About us

The Defence and NATO are mid-way through a time-critical digital and operational transformation. Therefore the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (FMI) is building a Data, IT and Governance division (DIG) that will deliver the digital foundation for future defence. The goal is to make data a strategic resource across the Defence – so relevant, secure and interoperable data can support faster decisions and mission execution.

You will become part of Data, IT and Governance, which is central to the data-centric transformation of the Defence. The division works closely across authorities, domains and suppliers.

In the Data Architecture and Data Model office we work across data strategy, data governance, data architecture, engineering, data platforms, AI and larger data projects. A central initiative is the establishment of a corporate-wide data platform, which shall create a common foundation for better access to, sharing of and use of data across the Defence Ministry's group of agencies.

Our ambition is not only to introduce new technology. We shall create a more data-centric Defence, where data can be brought into use securely and efficiently for both operational and administrative purposes and form the basis for analysis, automation and AI, among other things.

We work closely with the operational and administrative parts of the Defence, other authorities in the group and external technology suppliers. Our solutions must also be able to operate under the special requirements that follow from the Defence's tasks, including security, robustness and interoperability with NATO.

As a technical project manager you will therefore have the opportunity to work with technical issues where both the complexity and the framework conditions in several areas differ markedly from a typical commercial IT environment.

With us you will meet high professional standards, short decision paths and an environment where quality, security and automation are fundamental principles.

About the position

You will be responsible for the technical coordination and execution of projects on the customer side. You will work closely with project managers, data architects, data engineers, AI and security specialists, other technical experts and external suppliers.

A central part of the role is to be Defence's technically independent sparring partner towards the suppliers. You must be able to understand complex technical issues, ask the right questions and challenge proposed solutions, technical assumptions and estimates when necessary.

Our projects range from establishing common data platforms and data products to technical capabilities that enable analysis and use of AI. This requires understanding the entire chain from data sources, integration and data quality to platform, security and the use of data in analysis and AI solutions.

You do not need to be the deepest specialist in all these areas. Instead you should have a broad and solid technical understanding that enables you to see connections, identify risks and drive technical clarifications toward decision and implementation.

The role does not have responsibility for the overarching solution or enterprise architecture. Instead you must help ensure that architecture, requirements and technical decisions are translated into concrete project execution.

As a technical project manager you will, among other things,

  • drive and coordinate the technical part of larger data-, platform- and AI-related projects on the customer side
  • manage ongoing technical dialogue with suppliers and follow up on technical activities and deliverables
  • challenge and qualify suppliers' solution proposals, estimates and technical assumptions
  • plan and coordinate PoCs, test runs, technical trials and clarifications
  • contribute to test strategy, acceptance criteria and quality assurance of technical deliveries
  • identify and follow up on technical risks, dependencies and decision needs
  • contribute to the preparation and quality assurance of technical requirements and specification
  • contribute to project descriptions, project foundations and technical decision briefs
  • ensure coordination between the project and relevant domains including data architecture, engineering, AI, infrastructure as well as cyber- and information security
  • ensure alignment between technical activities, project plans and other deliverables
  • contribute to ensuring that technical knowledge and decisions are retained within the Defence and not only with external suppliers.

The role is both strategic and hands-on: you create overview and transparency, but you are also close to the concrete choices that make a difference in daily work.

About you

You are a delivery profile who can combine disciplined governance with agile and technical understanding, and who thrives in complex environments with high demands for security, traceability and governance.

We envisage that you have a relevant technical or engineering background and several years of experience in delivering complex IT or technology projects.

You may, for example, have worked as a technical project manager, lead engineer, solution architect, technical program manager or in a similar role where you have combined technical insight with responsibility for driving progress and coordinating different technical specialisms.

It is advantageous if you have experience with several of the following areas

  • data platforms and modern data architectures
  • data engineering, integration, APIs and data pipelines
  • cloud-, hybrid- or on-premise platforms
  • AI/ML platforms and the data- and infrastructural prerequisites for AI
  • generative AI, LLMs or similar technologies
  • testing and quality assurance
  • information and cyber security
  • DevSecOps, DataOps, CI/CD or similar development and operations models
  • technical PoCs and evaluating new technologies
  • supplier management and technical execution of projects with external technology suppliers.

The most important thing is not that you can check off all technologies. We are looking for a profile that combines technical heft with the ability to drive progress.

It is also advantageous if you have experience from a complex, politically governed organization - or are motivated by working in a context where technical solutions must operate in harmony with strategic, organizational and political frameworks.

You must be able to enter into technical discussions with specialists and suppliers, understand the consequences of different choices and subsequently translate the discussion into decisions, activities and deliverables.

You work in a structured way and take responsibility for bringing technical issues toward a conclusion. You also thrive in an environment where not all issues are resolved in advance and where new technologies and needs must be continually assessed.

You must be able to communicate complex technical issues clearly and precisely to technical specialists, project managers and decision-makers.

We offer

You will play a central role in building the Defence's future data and AI capabilities and have a significant opportunity to influence both the technical solutions and the way we implement complex technology projects.

The position offers a unique combination of technology, project management, and society-critical tasks. You will work closely with some of the technological areas that are of increasing importance for the Defence's development, and you will be part of an environment with high ambitions for the use of data and AI.

We emphasize building strong internal competencies. An important part of your role will therefore be to contribute to ensuring that the Defence is a professional, technically competent and autonomous customer that can collaborate effectively with suppliers, and at the same time can assess and challenge the technical choices made.

Employment terms

If you are an academic, you are employed under the current collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and a number of academic organizations for academics in the state (Academic Agreement).

If you have IT vocational education or another relevant education, you are employed under the current Joint Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and Public Employees Organization – The Public Sector (OAO-S Joint Agreement) and the organizational agreement for office clerks, laboratory technicians and IT employees.

Depending on your qualifications and competencies, there is an opportunity for negotiation of a supplement. There is an employer-funded pension scheme tied to the position.

The workplace is located in Ballerup.

As an employee under the Ministry of Defence's area, you are subject to certain special terms. You must, among other things, be security cleared and maintain the security clearance throughout the employment period.

You have as an employee a duty to perform service outside the country, including at units in international operations with a view to participating in conflict prevention, peacekeeping, peacemaking, humanitarian and other similar operations.
