About the job

About the Danish Energy Agency Energistyrelsen is a central regulatory authority in the climate, energy and supply sectors and works for the development of a greener Denmark, fair energy prices for both businesses and households, and world-class Danish energy security. From summer 2026 the agency also has the responsibility for Circular Economy, i.e. certain tasks related to waste, that shall contribute to a sustainable Denmark. In addition comes Energistyrelsen's Global Energy Collaboration, which is the agency's international activities to support the green transition.

The agency plays a central role in implementing the policy agendas on climate, energy and supply in a reality often characterized by both large ambitions and expectations combined with framework conditions that continually develop – nationally, European and global. At the same time the agency is responsible for a wide range of authorities tasks including regulation, supervision, subsidies and guidance, to be handled legally, efficiently and reliably.

About the two vacant positions Energistyrelsen's executive management consists of Director Adrian Lübbert, who took office 1 April 2026, and five deputy directors. Two of the five deputy director positions will be vacant for filling no later than 1 January 2027.

It is expected that one of the deputy directors will have managerial responsibility for the work with, among other things, circular economy, geographically primarily concentrated around Energistyrelsen's location in Odense, while the other deputy director is expected to have responsibility for areas related to energy production, e.g. the exploitation of resources in the Danish subsoil, geographically primarily concentrated around Energistyrelsen's location in Copenhagen.

To succeed in the position it is crucial that you have broad leadership experience, e.g. from a politically led organization, where you have achieved solid leadership results. As deputy director you will need to ensure professional advice and effective implementation of ongoing and upcoming political decisions, manage the overall relationship and coordination with the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities, other relevant agencies and external stakeholders, including relevant energy and utility companies, and ensure a lawful, efficient and reliable administration of the agency's tasks within your areas.

As deputy director you will also be part of Energistyrelsen's executive board and are expected to share responsibility for the development of the agency and the cross-cutting strategic task and resource prioritization.

As a leader you create engagement and followership through involvement, and you are able to recruit, develop and retain capable managers. We emphasize that you, based on your personality, professionalism and leadership, have influence and understand how to think and lead across a large agency.

In other words, these are two demanding top-management positions that require broad experience with political advice, professional leadership and operational management. In return you will become part of the top management of a society-critical agency that is centrally placed in relation to some important, current societal agendas: climate, energy, security of supply, sustainability and safety and preparedness.

About the candidates Energistyrelsen expects that you as the new deputy director have particularly the following competencies.

The formal qualification requirements

  • A relevant long-cycle higher education, possibly supplemented with post-graduate education at intermediate and/or top management level;
  • Broad leadership experience from previous leadership positions, where you have achieved solid results; and as a minimum part of your leadership experience comes from a government agency or a government department.

It will be regarded as an advantage if you have a strong and relevant professional profile within the areas of responsibility that one of the two positions includes. We are therefore looking for deputy directors who have general interest in and knowledge of climate, energy and the supply sector, and who more specifically have knowledge of the framework conditions for Circular Economy and/or energy production, including the exploitation of resources in the subsoil.

It will also be considered an advantage if you have experience with large-scale operations management and experience in leading managers.

The more personal/leadership competency requirements

  • Well-developed analytical capacity
  • Will and ability to plug into constructive, holistic boardroom collaboration
  • Will and ability to work with the management and development of your office heads
  • Political acumen
  • Good written and spoken communication skills
  • Well-developed relationship skills with internal and external stakeholders

Salary and terms of employment Both deputy directors report to the agency's director. Regarding the primary place of service, one deputy director with management responsibility for, among other things, energy production, e.g. the exploitation of resources in the Danish subsoil, is expected to have a service location in Copenhagen. The other deputy director with management responsibility for Circular Economy is expected to have a service location either in Copenhagen or in Odense, and practically with some mobility between Energistyrelsen's locations.

Employment is as deputy director in salary framework 38 (pay grade 2) under the Framework Agreement on the recruitment of managers in the state, and the salary is expected to amount more concretely to approx. DKK 1.2 million per year excluding pension. The appointment will be on terms of tenure, in accordance with the principles in the agreement on tenure appointments.

It is a condition for recruitment that you can be security checked for HEM, and that this is maintained throughout the employment.

Energistyrelsen regards diversity as an asset and encourages everyone, regardless of personal background, to apply for the position.
