Awake night shift with an 11-year-old boy with epilepsy

Do you thrive on waking night shifts where your professional knowledge and attentiveness are crucial? Then this could be a role for you.

About the task

You will become part of a fixed team surrounding an active, social and caring 11-year-old boy with autism, severe epilepsy and tuberous sclerosis complex. The boy is nonverbal but has good language comprehension and communicates with many sounds.

The task takes place at a respite care facility where you have a waking night shift. The boy has severe epilepsy, and a central part of your duty is to observe him throughout the night, register and respond to any epileptic seizures. You must be able to administer medication according to current instructions and manage his VNS (Vagus Nerve Stimulator).

There is also an educational/therapeutic part of the task. In the evening you support the boy through his fixed bedtime routines, including brushing teeth and changing diapers. In the morning you help him get ready for school and support him toward the transition to the school bus.

The boy benefits from structure, predictability and clear transitions. He can be resistant to demands, and it is therefore important that you are calm, can assess what he can tolerate and guide him in a safe and clear way.

About you

You can be a pedagogue, SSA, SSH or nurse. The educational requirement can be waived if you have relevant experience for the role.

It is an advantage if you have experience with epilepsy and VNS as well as autism and pedagogical support.

A car and a driver's license are required, as the respite care facility is difficult to reach by public transport.

Working hours

There are waking night shifts from 20:00–08:00, when the boy is at his respite care facility.

He is at respite care 106 days per year, and the shifts must be distributed between two staff members. This corresponds to about 53 days per staff member per year and about 92 hours per month.

The currently available shifts for the rest of 2026 are on the following dates

• October: 8., 14., 15., 22., 28., 29., 30. and 31.
• November: 5., 11., 12., 19., 25., 26., 27. and 28.
• December: 3., 9., 10., 17., 28., 29. and 30.
