About the job

Shall we be colleagues in the Maternity Department in Nuuk?

We are seeking midwives for both permanent positions and for temporary positions with employment from 1 December 2026 or by agreement. We look forward to reading your application.

We place a high value on presence and continuity in pregnancy and birth.

Working as a midwife in the maternity department in Nuuk is characterized by autonomous midwifery work and having time for calm and presence. We work to preserve normal birth, good collaboration across professional groups, and to help vulnerable families as best as possible.

The Maternity Department at Queen Ingrid's Hospital in Nuuk is a smaller specialty birth center with about 5-6 hundred births per year, of which about half are referred from the coastal towns due to complications or lack of readiness. We have a cesarean rate of about 12% despite the large share of complicated pregnancies. The Greenlandic birthing population is known for giving birth beautifully and quickly, which is also what we experience.

The Greenlandic birth culture is characterized by a large share of uncomplicated pregnancies, rapid births, and strong support from the family and the pregnant woman's network, where the birthing person often has many people with them at birth and they are good at giving the care the birthing person needs.

In the consultations we have the opportunity for continuity, as we as midwives follow the pregnant person and partner from the start of pregnancy, about from week 9 where we perform an intake lasting one hour. We follow the pregnant person throughout the pregnancy and offer midwife consultations in weeks 12+22+28+32+36+38+40 each lasting 30 minutes. In addition, MANU, parent-preparation education is offered, which is specially tailored for the upcoming parents in Greenland.

You will have the opportunity to influence your own shift schedule.

We offer

  • An exciting job in an fascinating country, at a workplace with great influence on your own daily life and managerial support.
  • Primarily labor ward shifts, consultations and possibly teaching in parent preparation.
  • Work in two different shift patterns; 8-hour shifts in the form of day shift or evening shift and a 24-hour on-call shift from home. In the on-call shifts you have either first call at 07:30-20:00 or 20:00-07:30. You can expect to have 1-3 on-call shifts per week and work every other weekend.
  • During your introduction days you will be accompanied by a colleague who introduces you to the functions you will perform.
  • A varied workweek with consultations, outpatient pregnant patients, and several practical tasks such as restocking delivery rooms after birth, ordering supplies/linen/meals for patients, and acute maternity ward work.

We are looking for you, who

  • Are proactive, have solid midwifery skills and a positive approach to the couples and colleagues.
  • Value collegial and social skills highly.
  • Are bilingual Greenlandic/Danish - this is not a requirement though.

About us

  • We are a dynamic and dedicated team of 16 on-call midwives, one development midwife and a lead midwife. There are always 2 on night shifts and we assist each other for the births.
  • We have good camaraderie and we prioritize a good tone and the social interaction in the department highly. For example, we have a joint breakfast every Friday, paid for by the department.

We look forward to working with you!
