About the job
Shall we be colleagues in the Maternity Department in Nuuk?
We are seeking midwives for both permanent positions and for temporary positions starting from December 1, 2026 or by mutual agreement. We look forward to reading your application.
We place great value on presence and continuity in pregnancy and birth.
Working as a midwife in the maternity department in Nuuk is characterized by independent midwifery work and that there is time for calm and presence. We work to preserve normal birth, a good collaboration across professional groups, and to help vulnerable families as best as possible.
The maternity department at Queen Ingrids Hospital in Nuuk is a smaller specialty birth center with about 500-600 births annually, of which about half are referred from coastal towns due to complications or lack of preparedness. We have a cesarean rate of about 12% despite the large proportion of complicated pregnancies. The Greenlandic birthing population is known for giving birth beautifully and quickly, which is also what we experience.
The Greenlandic birth culture is characterized by a high proportion of uncomplicated pregnancies, rapid births, and strong support from the family and the pregnant person’s network, where the birthing person typically has many people with them at the birth and they are good at providing the care the birthing person needs.
In the consultations we have the possibility of continuity, as we as midwives follow the pregnant person and the partner from the start of the pregnancy, around week 9 when we perform a one-hour journal intake. We follow the pregnant person throughout the pregnancy and offer midwife consultations in weeks 12+22+28+32+36+38+40, each 30 minutes long. In addition, MANU, parent-preparation teaching is specially designed for the upcoming parents in Greenland.
You will have the opportunity to influence your own shift schedule.
We offer
- An exciting job in an fascinating country, at a workplace with great influence on your own daily life and managerial support.
- Primarily maternity ward shifts, consultations and possibly teaching in parent preparation.
- Work in two different shift patterns; 8-hour shifts in the form of day shift or evening shift and night shift with on-call from home. In night shifts you have either first call from 07:30-20:00 or 20:00-07:30. You can expect to have 1-3 night shifts per week and to work every other weekend.
- In your introduction days you are paired with a colleague who introduces you to the functions you will perform.
- A varied work week with consultations, outpatient pregnant patients, a number of practical tasks such as stocking birth rooms after birth, ordering depot goods / linen / food for patients and acute obstetric on-call work.
We are looking for you who
- Have initiative, a good midwifery professional skill, and a positive approach to couples and colleagues.
- Value collegial and social competencies highly.
- Are bilingual Greenlandic/Danish - this is however not a requirement.
About us
- We are a dynamic and engaged team of 16 on-call midwives, one development midwife and a leading midwife. There are always 2 on duty during the night shift and we assist each other for the births.
- We have good cohesion and we prioritize a good tone and social interaction in the department. For example, we have a shared breakfast every Friday, paid for by the department.
We look forward to working with you!
