What does a Social counsellor earn?

Social workers are predominantly employed in the public sector — municipalities and state institutions. Pay is set mainly via agreements with HK/Municipal and the Danish Association of Social Workers (DS). Pay differences across municipalities are typically limited, but specialist roles (e.g. family law, substance abuse, vulnerable groups) and management add supplements. Privately employed social workers in NGOs and unemployment funds can negotiate individual terms.

According to Statistics Denmark's latest wage structure survey (2024), average monthly earnings for a Social counsellor are 44.983 DKK (gross, all sectors). That is close to the national average for all wage earners (approx. 48.000 DKK/month).

This job typically requires knowledge at the highest level (a long higher education), and pay is often negotiated individually on top of a collective-agreement base. Specialisation, changing industry and willingness to negotiate move the needle the most — and the gap between public and private employees in the same profession is often substantial.
