About the job

Do you like diagnosing from symptoms and figuring out what the patient is suffering from?

Do you enjoy teamwork and a varied and busy everyday life?

Would you like to learn to manage a broad spectrum of acutely ill patients?

Do you like occasionally taking part in time-critical, life-saving interventions?

IN THAT CASE ACUTE MEDICINE IS THE RIGHT SPECIALTY FOR YOU!

Acute medicine is about stabilization, diagnostics and teamwork. We triage, examine and treat patients in the acute phase of their illness or injury. The patient clientele is varied – from orthopedic surgical minor injuries to critically ill medical, surgical and cardiological patients. As an I-doctor in FAM, Sygehus Sønderjylland, you will acquire broad clinical competencies.

The close interaction with other specialties and other professional groups trains your skills in communication, organization and collaboration. You will also gain competences in triage, prioritization, acute medical ultrasound diagnostics, ABCDE-systematics on admission of the unstable patient and guidance of KBU doctors and medical students.

What does my work involve?

As an introductory doctor you will learn to manage a wide spectrum of acute patients. The focus will be on the reception/triage of acute medical and surgical patients and emergency department work. If you do not have ER experience, there will always be 2 months as an orthopedic surgery on-call rotation. You must always work symptom-oriented and be comfortable ordering diagnostics and treatments based on probability assessment.

Facts about FAM, Sygehus Sønderjylland

Common Acute Admissions (FAM) is located on the Sygehus Sønderjylland campus in Aabenraa and has a catchment area of about 235,000 inhabitants.

The department consists of two sections on two floors, FAM 1 and FAM 2, with respectively 12 treatment beds and 44 inpatient beds in good physical facilities.

  • At FAM 1 all unsorted patients with injuries are admitted. In addition, all acute orthopedic surgical patients, trauma patients and "112-patients" from all over Southern Jutland are treated here. On average 65 patients are treated per day.
  • At FAM 2 patients referred for acute workup and treatment are admitted, which can take place acutely ambulant (same day) or during admission for up to 48 hours. About 50 patients are admitted per day. We take in the patients and triage to the relevant specialty. We personally conduct rounds on the patients who remain unstable or diagnostically unresolved.

We have a good collaboration with the on-call teams from the other departments, who also work in FAM.

We currently have 7 specialists in FAM with different professional backgrounds, including 3 specialists in Acute Medicine, 7-8 residents in Acute Medicine, 7-8 intern doctors in Acute Medicine, 5-6 KBU doctors, about 100 nurses and about 20 acute secretaries.

From spring 2027 we will also have residents in General Medicine, and we have hired a fourth specialist in Acute Medicine, starting 1 May 2027.

We schedule and staff acute medical on-call, intermediate on-call and back-up on-call rotations, all around the clock, as well as an trauma shift function until 20:00.

Is there an academic environment?

FAM runs together with the University of Southern Denmark a focused research unit in Acute Medicine with about 4-8 PhD students. We have a professor in Acute Medicine, who is also chief physician in FAM, as well as 1 associate professor and 2 adjunct professors.

We have a close collaboration with the hospital's Learning and Research House, including simulation training. There is opportunity to participate in smaller and larger research projects, and we are happy to provide guidance and support for your own research and teaching activities.

What expectations do you have of me?

We look forward to meeting our new introductory doctors! You may bring a healthy dose of curiosity. We expect you to fully engage in acute medical work, to want to learn independently and to teach others, to be a good team player with respect for other professions and specialties and – not least – that you enjoy being there for the patients.
