About the job

The Royal Danish Theatre seeks two director's assistants with relevant experience for appointment in season 2027/28 from August 1, 2027 to July 31, 2028.

As a director's assistant at the Opera, your primary task is to be the director's right hand and ensure that the respective production is well documented, and that the director's intentions are followed at every performance.

You act as the link between the freelance director and the house and must communicate important information and relevant questions in both directions. It is expected that you actively contribute to a positive working environment in a sometimes busy daily life.

Your daily work reflects a dynamic organization with a high level of activity. You will therefore work with many different tasks.

Your tasks

  • Be present at all company rehearsals to note staging, motivations and concept, and to serve as interpreter and sparring partner for the director, who is often a foreign guest.

Participate in planning the overall rehearsal process in collaboration with the producer, including review of the master plan and consideration of leave requests.

  • Develop a cross-schedule or scene breakdown for the production, if this does not already exist.
  • “Cover” the arrangement for the absent singer in case of illness or other absence during the rehearsal period.
  • “Clean” the score after the premiere and ensure that the material is readily accessible for later revivals or exchange with other opera houses.
  • Archive relevant notes, descriptions, records, cross-lists, cueing, and choir lists.
  • Supervise performances after the premiere to ensure that the artistic quality and the original instructions are maintained throughout the run.
  • As needed, serve as revival director on productions you have previously assisted on.

Your qualifications

  • Fluent in English in writing and speaking and ideally have knowledge of Italian, German or French.
  • Have musicality and can read music. This is an absolute prerequisite.
  • Have a strong interest in the world of theatre and experience from similar areas.
  • Work in a structured manner and have a pronounced sense of order.
  • Can maintain overview in pressured situations.
  • Have strong collaboration skills, good people understanding, a sense of humor and flexibility.
  • Are an experienced user of the Microsoft Office suite.

Employment terms

  • Salary and terms follow the applicable collective agreement.
  • The position is full-time.
  • There will be periods with evening and weekend work.

Application

  • Apply for the position by clicking on "Apply for the position" and attaching CV and any references.
  • The application deadline is 18/11-26. We expect to conduct interviews shortly thereafter.
  • All interested are encouraged to apply regardless of background.
  • Please note that a child attendance certificate will be obtained in connection with employment.
  • If you have questions about the position, you are welcome to contact house director Line Kromann at [email protected] .
