About the job

We are seeking a laboratory technician trainee for our research group Fish Biology, which studies fish physiological processes and morphological structures with a start date of 1 February 2027. The position is linked to the education as a laboratory technician, which includes an obligatory internship period of 11 months.

The group's research provides new insights into fish biology, eco-physiology and life-history strategy through experimental studies, field-based investigations and laboratory analyses. We focus on the effects of climate and environmental changes, biodiversity and sustainability on the development, plasticity and welfare of individuals. The basis is controlled experiments, field studies and laboratory analyses, where we use physiological measurements, molecular biological methods and histology as tools in the laboratory.

Our results contribute to increased understanding of population and ecosystem dynamics, which is essential for stock assessment and management of marine fish resources as well as in relation to conservation biology and nature restoration. The goal is to create the necessary insight to balance long-term, sustainable use of fish as a food source with an understanding of their biology and response to external environmental influences.

Work in the group takes place in an international research environment and in collaboration with colleagues from different disciplines.

Opportunity to gain new competences

Core tasks in the laboratory consist of biological analysis of samples from fish at different life stages collected during experimental work and field studies. You will be trained in molecular and histological laboratory methods as well as physiological measurement techniques. You will be integrated into tasks related to our research projects and participate in safety work, chemical analyses and the general laboratory operation.

In relation to molecular biological studies, activities include analysis of gene expression including sample handling, RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, primer design and qPCR as well as quality control at all levels. DNA-based methods and genotyping are also part of the group’s teaching at BSc level.

Morphologically we work with histology including method development especially staining techniques and image analysis related to fish reproductive physiology and morphology.

There will be opportunities to participate in experimental work and sampling, e.g., on research cruises, and to contribute to the group’s teaching at BSc level.

Our expectations of you

  • You have at the start of the internship period passed the theoretical part of the laboratory technician education.
  • You work carefully and systematically, and you are eager to learn to work both independently and in teams.
  • You are proactive, responsible and thrive in a flexible daily life.
  • You have a genuine interest in biological and natural science subjects.
  • You read, write and speak English at a level where you can engage professionally and socially with international colleagues.

What we offer you

  • A thorough onboarding and a good working environment where our diversity and complementary competencies are seen as a strength.
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration with a focus on exciting research projects and advisory tasks.
  • An active place in an international research group comprising researchers, assistants and students.
  • Challenging, varied and educational tasks where you gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment.

Salary and terms of employment

Salary and terms in accordance with the OAO-S collective agreement and the organizational agreement for clerical workers, laboratory technicians and IT staff (HK/State) entered into with the Ministry of Finance.

The appointment is for 11 months starting 1 February 2027. The place of employment will be DTU Lyngby Campus.
