About the job

Do you want to help improve the condition of Denmark's fjords and coastal waters? We are seeking an engaged marine biologist for work with marine water planning.

As part of the Water Environment unit, you will have the opportunity to work with complex and professionally challenging tasks related to the Danish implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive, which has great significance for Denmark's water environment. You will work closely with the ministry's department, research institutions and stakeholders.

With us you will be part of the Directorate for Green Area Reallocation and Water Environment, which works purposefully with the green transition – and where your work will have a meaning for the future of nature and the environment.

You will be based in the Water Environment unit. We are a unit of about 25 employees with a team leader and a head of office. We work with complex, professional topics within the assessment and regulation of the water environment. We are responsible for ensuring a substantial part of the professional basis for the upcoming water area plans and at the same time contributing to the administration of the current water area plans.

We emphasize collaboration both within the individual disciplines, across the unit and across the agency and with the Environmental Protection Agency. We have a flat structure with short paths between management and staff. The atmosphere is informal and the tone is direct and characterized by both humor and respect.

Your daily life: When marine water planning is your field

In this position you will

  • Participate in the preparation and implementation of water area plans under the Water Framework Directive.
  • Contribute to projects that improve the technical basis for water planning for coastal waters and the condition of Denmark's fjords and coastal waters.
  • Engage in marine-science collaborations with research institutions and other experts
  • Work with many different disciplines, including e.g. marine interventions such as eelgrass planting, condition assessment for biological indicators (e.g., benthic fauna, chlorophyll and eelgrass), relationships between pressure factors and environmental status and marine modeling with statistical and hydrodynamic models.
  • Communicate knowledge about complex biological and physical processes in a simple and easy-to-understand way – both in writing and orally.

You will become part of a professionally strong team that actively works to find solutions to complex challenges in the marine environment – in close collaboration with colleagues across units, particularly our unit in Sollerup.

You will have a daily life where professionalism, collaboration and responsibility go hand in hand. We value curiosity and innovation, and you will be part of an environment where your expertise is heard.

Who are you?

You have

  • A relevant education as a marine biologist, or equivalent
  • Experience with marine ecosystem management, water planning or related areas
  • Broad knowledge of the ecology of coastal ecosystems
  • Analytical skills and a good overview – even when the waves are high
  • Good collaboration skills and a desire to work across disciplines

It is an advantage if you have knowledge in one or more of the areas: marine interventions (e.g., eelgrass planting), various pressure factors affecting the marine environment (e.g., nutrients and fishing), marine soft-bottom fauna, biological indicators for status assessment, and marine calculation models - statistical models and/or more complex hydro-dynamic and ecological models.

Why you should choose us

With us you have the opportunity to make a tangible difference for the maritime environment now and in the future. You will work in an organization with skilled colleagues who share your passion for the environment and the green transition. We emphasize professional development, flexible working conditions and a good collegial community.

Salary and terms of employment

You will be employed under the current agreement for academics in the state.

The position, which is full-time, is intended to be filled on 1 December 2026.

The area of employment is the Ministry of Nature and Animal Welfare with its associated institutions. The duty station is the Agency for Green Area Reallocation and Water Environment, Lerchesgade 35, 5000 Odense C.
