About the job

Are you curious about criminology, and about how Denmark's Prisons work to prevent new crime? Are you methodologically strong, and do you want to develop analyses that make a difference? Are you also a team player who is not afraid to take initiative? Then you may be the intern we are seeking for the Evaluation Unit in the Agency for Denmark's Prisons.

Denmark's Prisons ensures that the sentences pronounced by the courts are carried out. As part of the punishment, incarcerated individuals are offered a range of different interventions designed, among other things, to prevent re-offending when they are released. In the Evaluation Unit of the Agency for Denmark's Prisons we investigate who gets which interventions, and what effects the interventions have.

Right now we are among other things undertaking an extensive registry-based analysis concerning substance abuse treatment, a large survey among inmates about well-being during custody, and a qualitative interview study on inmates' views on healthcare provision in Denmark's Prisons.

The unit consists of a deputy head, five analysts and a student. We have a very strong methodological expertise in quantitative and qualitative methods, a strong interest in good study designs, and a good collegial community.

We are seeking an intern to join our unit and work closely with us on various projects in the first half of 2027.

The Internship Position

As an intern you will work with tasks of very varying character. Some weeks you will be immersed in quantitative analyses of data from our own source systems or data from Statistics Denmark. Some weeks you will, together with a colleague, visit prisons and remand centers to interview inmates or speak with staff. Other weeks you will participate in designing next year's survey among inmates, spar on team tasks, and respond to email inquiries.

And in other weeks you may be transcribing interviews, entering survey responses, preparing PowerPoint presentations, or something entirely different. Your portfolio will therefore be broad and can to some extent be shaped according to your wishes, including perhaps the topic or issue you will base your eventual internship report on.

You will use the full range of methodological tools, which we are confident will be expanded during your internship. In addition you will gain solid knowledge of the prison service and a unique opportunity to work with some outstanding data in the field. If you have interest and ability for it, it may also be possible to continue working on relevant issues and data in a later thesis.

As an intern we expect that you

  • Are pursuing a social science education
  • Have strong methodological skills and a desire to spar
  • Have experience in coding and performing analyses in R or SAS
  • Are responsible and an ambitious team player with high quality standards
  • Can work in a structured and independent manner
  • Are good at collaborating and value a positive mood

Evaluation Unit

The Evaluation Unit is a relatively newly established unit, which was created in late 2025 as part of implementing the political agreement on the criminal reform, adopted earlier the same year.

The unit is part of the Office for Data and Analysis, which besides the Evaluation Unit also comprises the Statistics Unit. The Statistics Unit is responsible for a number of statistical products, answers inquiries from the Ministry of Justice, the Parliament and the press, and prepares the management information that supports coherent governance of and knowledge about Denmark's Prisons with respect to data and analyses.

The office overall consists of about 20 employees.

Salary and Employment Conditions

We expect the internship to run from January or February to June or July, and thus have a duration of 5-6 months.

As a rule, the working week is 37 hours. If you are not able to do a full-time internship, we can, however, find a solution.

Provided it fits with the university's rules for internships and ETCS credits, you will be able to be employed and paid as a student for up to 15 out of the 37 hours/week.

The workplace is the Agency for Denmark's Prisons, located at Strandgade 100 in Christianshavn. There will be an opportunity to work from home 1-2 days per week, and occasionally there will be travel to Denmark's Prisons' campuses around the country.

Application

The position is applied for electronically via the button “Search for the position”.

Applications, CV, documentation of education and other relevant material must be received in the recruitment system

It is a condition of employment that, in connection with the interview, you consent to the Agency for Denmark's Prisons obtaining and assessing information about you from the Central Criminal Register.

If you have questions about the position, you are welcome to contact the Deputy Head of the Evaluation Unit, Bolette Danckert, at telephone 7255 4664 (not available in week 42). You can read more about us at Denmark's Prisons - We run the country's prisons
