About the job

Do you want to use your nursing expertise within a framework where you work clinically across the board, interdisciplinary, and with a clear societal impact? We are seeking a nurse for the Health Unit in Randers Prison as part of an upscaling. The upscaling is connected to increased focus on health and interventions for vulnerable and at-risk inmates in light of the new penal reform.

The position is initially 37 hours per week, and is expected to be filled on 1 January 2027 or by agreement.

About the workplace

As a employed prison nurse you will be based under the Health Unit in the District Office in the West Prison District, with primary service location in Randers Prison.

In collaboration with your experienced nursing colleague in the prison, a doctor and a psychiatrist, you will be responsible for providing the health care services to the inmates.

We offer somewhat different frameworks where a key competence of yours will be the ability to collaborate positively in an interdisciplinary environment with prison guards, nursing colleagues, doctors, psychiatrists, external partners such as hospitals and addiction centers.

The Health Unit provides health services at a level comparable to general practice - with a particular focus on complexity, social vulnerability, substance abuse, mental distress and chronic disease.

The job as a prison nurse

The clinical tasks are very varied and with varying complexity and can best be compared to the workflow in a medical practice, as inmates contact the nursing clinic with issues they would otherwise have contacted their own doctor about.

It is crucial in the job that you want to work with a patient group living in a prison environment who often have multifaceted, complex health issues of both physical, mental, and social nature, often combined with compliance problems.

In the upscaling, there is a strengthening of the professional effort toward vulnerable groups - e.g. through early detection, continuity, stable medication, focus on patient safety and close interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as a rehabilitative approach where we support the inmate’s self-care, coping and health competencies. This can include targeted guidance, motivational talks and support to navigate treatment and agreements - also with a view to better sector transitions upon release.

Prison nursing requires high professional standards as well as an empathetic, humane, inclusive and affirming approach, where it is often necessary to be able to “think outside the box” within the given framework to solve the task.

The nursing tasks include among others

  • Initial health interviews upon admission focusing on screening for chronic and mental illnesses.
  • Independent nursing consultations based on the inmates’ somatic, mental and chronic issues, including advising and guiding on health-preserving conditions and self-care.
  • Referral to, participation in, and follow-up on doctor/psychiatrist consultations.
  • Planning, follow-up, control and coordination of new and ongoing treatment courses of both acute and chronic character, including conducting EKG, LFU, wound care, vaccinations and similar clinical work.
  • Management of medication dosing for the facility’s inmates.
  • Acting in a role as a health professional sparring partner for prison-related colleagues.

Who are you?

We are looking for a colleague whose professional toolbox is in order, and who can thrive in a dynamic and different environment with clear structures but essentially a place and a nursing community with ambitions. We focus on quality, standardization of workflows, patient safety and competence development.

We place particular emphasis on the following criteria

  • It is an essential requirement that you have been educated as a nurse for several years.
  • It is important that you professionally are able to quickly identify, detect and assess nursing issues and act independently on them.
  • You must have a high degree of self-management, independence, a sense of responsibility and the ability to contribute positively to a small mono-disciplinary work community that is based on the principles of a self-managing team with distant leadership.
  • You must be able to work in a structured way, with a focus on patient safety.
  • You must have good collaboration skills with the ability to engage in problem-solving in collaborative relationships, since interdisciplinary collaboration with the prison’s other professional groups is of decisive importance in daily life.
  • You are present and equipped with a friendly, calm, positive and humane life view and preferably invest yourself to create a good joint working environment with learning, job satisfaction, well-being and good collaborative relationships at the forefront.
  • You are equipped with good pedagogical abilities and can communicate safely and clearly for guidance to both inmates and staff.
  • You must have broad medical experience from, for example, acute/medical, addiction treatment, home care, psychiatry or social medical services.
  • You must rest in your professional knowledge and have an interest in a complex clinical field where somatic, psychiatry, substance abuse and social vulnerability often overlap.

Salary and employment terms

Hiring and remuneration are in accordance with the collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions and CO10, as well as the state nurses’ collective agreement and the new pay system for civil servants and similar state-employed nurses between CO10 and any local agreements. In addition, allowances may be agreed depending on experience and qualifications.

  • The position is a permanent one with a weekly working time of 37 hours .
  • The assigning region is Denmark’s Prisons, and the primary workplace is the East Jutland prisons, supervision, juvenile supervision and release prison, Randers Prison, Møllestræde 8, 8900 Randers.
  • The position is to be filled by 1 January 2027 .

Note

There is a good opportunity to influence the planning of one's own working hours based on operations. Working hours are always daytime, with fixed attendance after agreement at 7:30/8:00 and time off after agreement between 15:00/16:00.

In principle, work is never on weekends or holidays.

During holidays and in case of illness, you are self-supporting on the facilities with the understanding that the health unit’s nurses are available to cover for one another. Therefore, you should be willing to substitute in, for example, Viborg Prison during holiday periods.
