About the job
Are you a nursing student on the 4th semester or higher, and would you like to translate your theoretical knowledge into practice, develop your nursing professional competencies, and get an exciting start to your career in psychiatry? Then we may have the perfect student job for you!
At Psychiatric Ward 4 we are looking for engaged and curious nursing students from the 4th semester and up who want to become part of our interdisciplinary community as hourly paid temporary staff.
With us you get a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in psychiatric nursing, strengthen your clinical competencies, and learn more about what kind of nurse you want to be. You will become part of a department where the relationship with the patient, professionalism, and collaboration with the patient are at the center.
We know that the transition from student to graduate nurse can be significant. Therefore we view the student job as an opportunity to give you a solid professional foundation and valuable experience that you can take with you in your education and future career.
Who are we?
At Psychiatric Ward 4 we specialize in observation, assessment and treatment of primarily schizophrenia and acute psychosis. We also have a subspecialty in dual diagnosis treatment as well as patients who are sentenced to treatment or are on surrogate custody.
The ward has space for 14 patients aged 18 and up. We encounter people with many different life stories, social backgrounds and complex issues. This demands professionalism, curiosity and an ability to meet each person with an individual approach.
We work with both short and longer patient pathways, where relationship work is a central part of nursing. This means that with us you will have the opportunity to experience how psychiatric nursing unfolds in practice – both in acute situations and in more long-term treatment work.
Who are you?
- Are a nursing student on the 4th semester or higher.
- Interested in working with people with mental disorders.
- Curious about psychiatric nursing and want to develop your professional and personal competencies.
- Willing to apply your theoretical knowledge in meetings with patients.
- Committed, approachable and good at collaborating.
- Can stay calm and seek help/sparring when situations become challenging.
- Want to contribute positively to the community and the department’s daily life.
You do not need to have experience from psychiatry. The most important thing is that you want to learn, are open to new experiences and meet our patients with respect, interest and care.
A student job that contributes to your career start
We do not just want to offer you a temporary job – we want to give you the opportunity to develop as a future nurse.
As an hourly paid temp you will be a part of the department’s daily work and have the opportunity to:
- Gain practical experience in psychiatric nursing.
- Practice your communication and relational skills.
- Get insight into working with patients with complex psychiatric issues.
- Develop your observation skills and clinical decision-making.
- Gain experience with interdisciplinary collaboration and coordinated patient pathways.
- Become familiar with documentation, patient involvement and nursing interventions.
- Create a stronger foundation for the transition from student to graduate nurse.
We see it as an investment in both you and the future nurses that you get the chance during your education to build experience and knowledge of the psychiatric specialty.
Good colleagues make the difference
We are a diverse staff group with different professional backgrounds and educations. Here there are both newly graduated and experienced colleagues who all contribute to a strong interdisciplinary community.
We believe that different perspectives and experiences create the best solutions for patients. Therefore we prioritize professional sparring, joint reflection and a work environment where people help each other.
With us you are never alone with a challenge or a difficult situation. We place importance on you as a student and temp feeling welcome, safe and a natural part of the staff group.
We prepare you well for the task
We are aware that psychiatry can be a new work area for you. Therefore we ensure a thorough introduction to the ward, our patients and the tasks you will perform.
You will receive an introduction and training based on your experience and your level of study, so you feel well equipped for the tasks. We focus on giving you the opportunity to learn in practice, ask questions and receive professional sparring from experienced colleagues. In addition we focus on competence development and offer relevant introductory and course opportunities, including among other things communicative de-escalation and conflict management.
Everyday life at Psychiatric Ward 4 – told by the staff
A typical day on the ward is varied and offers many different nursing tasks.
You will, among other things, gain insight into and have the opportunity to participate in:
- Relationship work and contact with patients.
- Supportive conversations and social interaction.
- Observation of patients' mental state and well-being.
- Work with psychoeducation and Safeward.
- Patient involvement and individual treatment plans.
- Environment-therapeutic measures and de-escalation work.
- Interdisciplinary discussions and collaboration around patients' treatment courses.
- Safety-building methods such as NADA and our Calm Down-box, where we use various non-pharmacological measures.
You will naturally receive tasks and responsibilities that are adapted to your level of education, your competencies and the training you have completed.
Patient involvement is important to us
We have asked our patients what they value in meeting their contact person. Their answers are clear: It matters to be met with respect, to be listened to and to experience that others can hold their suffering and at the same time help create hope for change.
These are values we work from every day.
As a future nurse you will have the opportunity with us to experience how important the human relationship is and how even small actions can make a difference for a person in a difficult life situation.
Flexibility that fits your study life
We know that your studies naturally come first, and that there must be room for both teaching, clinics, exams and leisure. Therefore we are seeking hourly paid temps who can join the ward’s shift schedule by agreement and to the extent that fits with their studies.
What can we offer you?
- An exciting and educational student job in a specialized psychiatric inpatient unit.
- A strong interdisciplinary community with engaged and helpful colleagues.
- Thorough introduction and training.
- Opportunity to develop your clinical, communicative and relational competencies.
- Experience with complex patient pathways and psychiatric nursing.
