About the job

Do you want to help build a new guidance function where you can make a concrete difference for people in one of life’s most vulnerable situations?

We are looking for an educational guidance counselor for 32 hours per week for the prison area under Nordjyllands arrester og tilsyn. You will be employed at Herning Prison but must also cover the prisons in Nykøbing Mors, Viborg, Holstebro and Ringkøbing.

As an educational guidance counselor you will be part of a new professional initiative in the prisons, where you in close collaboration with the prisons’ teachers, social workers and other staff will support the inmates’ opportunities for education.

Who are we?

The prisons are part of Danmarks Fængsler and play a central role in guiding inmates towards either serving their sentence or release. Here we meet people in a crucial phase of their lives, where there is often a need for rapid clarification, realistic perspectives and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

As an educational guidance counselor you will be part of a new professional group that will strengthen the educational efforts in the prisons. Together with teachers, social workers, correctional officers and management you contribute to creating coherence in the inmate’s educational path – both during the stay in prison and in the transition to either continuing in a facility or release.

You are given a unique opportunity to help develop a new function, where you help shape both tasks, collaboration forms and the future guidance efforts.

About the job

As an educational guidance counselor you will have a varied daily routine with both individual guidance conversations, administrative tasks and cross-disciplinary cooperation.

Your main tasks will include, among other things, to

  • conduct individual guidance conversations with inmates about educational and employment opportunities
  • motivate inmates to pursue education – also when they are not immediately in the target group for AVU or FVU
  • advise on educational opportunities during serving and contribute to the inmate being referred to the most relevant offer
  • advise on educational opportunities after transfer to a prison or upon release
  • conduct urgent guidance conversations for example at new admissions, transfers or interrupted education programs
  • obtain examination certificates, educational documentation and previous OBU tests and ensure correct journaling
  • record guidance courses and documentation in PUMA
  • keep inmates’ educational wishes and action plans updated
  • coordinate waiting lists for teaching in close collaboration with the prisons’ teachers.
  • collaborate with guidance counselors in other prisons and detention centers to create good transitions between institutions

The position involves a considerable amount of administrative work, where structure, documentation and follow-up are an important part of the task.

You will be working in several prisons on a daily basis and must therefore thrive with a mobile everyday life where planning and flexibility are a natural part of the job. Several of the prisons have limited office facilities, so you must be prepared to work from home. It is also a condition for performing the job that you hold a driving license.

Who are you?

We imagine that you

  • have a diploma in education-, vocational-, study- and career guidance or equivalent qualifications. If you do not already have the qualification or equivalent documented qualifications, you must be prepared to obtain the diploma as part of your employment
  • have in-depth knowledge of the adult education system
  • have experience guiding adults with different backgrounds
  • work in a structured manner and have an eye for documentation and administrative processes
  • can build trust and motivation in people who often find themselves in vulnerable and unresolved life situations
  • can work independently and at the same time participate in close cross-disciplinary collaboration
  • thrive in a daily life where plans can change at short notice
  • have good written and oral communication skills
  • are eager to help develop a new function and actively contribute to shaping the future guidance efforts.

Experience from or knowledge of the educational options in Danmarks Fængsler is an advantage, but not a prerequisite.

We offer

As an employee of Danmarks Fængsler you become part of a workplace with great societal significance and many different professional disciplines.

We offer, among other things

  • opportunity to help establish and develop a new guidance function in the prisons
  • a meaningful job where you can make a concrete difference for people in a crucial phase of their lives
  • strong cross-disciplinary collaboration with teachers, social workers, correctional officers and management
  • a varied daily life with a high degree of autonomy
  • thorough introduction and training in the framework and safety procedures of Danmarks Fængsler
  • professional sparring and opportunity to develop the guidance efforts together with engaged colleagues.

Salary and employment terms

Hiring and remuneration are in accordance with the collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Teachers’ Central Organisation (LC) and CO10 as well as the collective agreement for guidance counselors at Studievalg Danmark and the Danish Prison and Probation Service institutions and any local agreements. In addition, supplements may be agreed depending on experience and qualifications.
