About the job

The Danish Prison Service is continuously seeking transport officers who wish to train to become prison officers. It is possible to be admitted to the training three times a year.

Why should you apply?

We offer, first and foremost, an extended training program that opens up new opportunities in the Danish Prison Service. As a permanently employed prison officer, you can work at all institutions across the country. You will get closer to the work with the inmates' serving of sentences, where you take part in case processing and the fixed routines. You will gain new knowledge and learning during the training, and as a prison officer you can specialize in many different directions, such as interrogation leadership, operations leadership, or as a dog handler.

You will receive full pay with no pay deductions during the training, and we also offer

  • Hourly/daily unemployment benefits according to applicable rules during the schooling period and during the practicum.
  • Free dormitory accommodation during the school stay if you live more than 70 km away
  • Employment as a civil servant (prison officer) after completing and passing the training
  • Opportunity to continue in service as a transport officer if, during merit training, you decide to remain a transport officer.

Why you specifically?

As a transport officer in the Danish Prison Service you are trained to take on a great responsibility and you are good at balancing between order and security as well as supporting and motivating the inmates. We would like to build on that. Therefore we offer you credit for the prison officer training at one of our prisons or remand centers.

Furthermore, we have already, through the training as a transport officer, ensured that you can achieve success as a prison officer, because you:

  • Possess the ability to balance between control, security and safety on the one hand, and support and motivation of the inmate on the other
  • Exude authority, are responsible and can remain calm and maintain an overview in conflict situations
  • Are able to manage your own emotions when working with people in crisis, where difficult situations and conflicts can arise
  • Are flexible and independent
  • Must be medically fit for service
  • Have a matter-of-fact and professional approach to solving tasks
  • Work systematically
  • Can work with people from different backgrounds and from different cultures
  • Have an aptitude for handling our target group
  • Actively work to create well-being for inmates and colleagues
  • Accept new ideas and initiatives for change
  • Comply with the Danish Prison and Probation Service's 'employee foundation' and 'cross-functional tasks'

As a fully trained prison officer you will be up to date with relevant legislation. You will know how to develop constructive relationships with the inmates and you will acquire strong written and verbal communication skills.

Who can apply?

All transport officers who are employed can apply, regardless of professional background, duty location, salary level or obtained seniority.

Staff wardens who seek admission must be medically fit for duty in their current position.

Training positions/employment

During merit training you must undertake internships in both open and closed settings. This gives you an introduction to the varied tasks in the Danish Prison Service. As part of the application you must indicate which duty location you want to be employed at upon completion of the training.

In the application form please rank three duty locations for your employment. You cannot guarantee that you will receive your first or second choice. Note: This particularly applies to the remand centers, where there are only very few vacant positions.

You can prioritize between the following duty locations in the west

  • Aalborg Remand
  • Aarhus Remand
  • Enner Mark Prison
  • Kolding Remand
  • Kragskovhede Prison
  • Møgelkær Prison
  • Nr. Snede Prison
  • Nyborg Prison
  • Odense Remand
  • Randers Remand
  • Renbæk Prison
  • Sdr. Omme Prison
  • Søbysøgård Prison

You can prioritize between the following duty locations in the east

Salaries and terms of employment

Transport officers maintain the same pay group and grade as the position from which they come as Transport Officers.

Employment is in accordance with the Civil Service Act. Salary placement is according to the salary agreement between the Danish Prisons and the Prison Service Union in Denmark and the principles of New Pay.

The recruitment area is the Ministry of Justice with its related institutions.

The workplace is a prison or remand center within the Prison Service West. The concrete duty location is agreed as part of the merit training program.

You only need to upload your application as a civil servant; it need not be more than 1/4 page, where you write why you would like to be a prison officer, and request your immediate manager to provide an assessment. They must be uploaded before the application deadline for the training start you want.

When both your application and the assessment are uploaded, your application will be considered.
