About the job

Are you keen to help build a new guidance function where you can make a concrete difference for people in one of life’s most vulnerable situations?

We are seeking a training counselor (education and career guidance) for 32 hours per week for the remand prison area under the Danish Prisons and Probation Service. You will be employed at Aalborg Remand Prison but will also cover the remand prisons in Frederikshavn and Hobro.

As an education counselor you will be part of a new professional initiative in the remand prisons, where you in close collaboration with the schools’ teachers, social workers and other staff shall support the incarcerated individuals’ opportunities for education.

Who are you?

We imagine that you

  • have a Diploma in Education, Vocational and Career Guidance (DUEK) or equivalent qualifications. If you do not already have the qualification or equivalent documented qualifications, you must be prepared as part of your employment to undertake the DUEK program
  • have in-depth knowledge of the adult education system
  • have experience guiding adults with different starting points
  • work in a structured way and have a focus on documentation and administrative processes
  • can build trust and motivation in people who often find themselves in vulnerable and unresolved life situations
  • can work independently while also engaging in close interdisciplinary collaboration
  • thrive in a daily routine where plans can change with short notice
  • have good written and oral communication skills
  • want to help develop a new function and actively contribute to shaping the future guidance effort

Experience from and familiarity with the educational opportunities in Denmark’s Prisons is an advantage but not a prerequisite.

About the job

As an education counselor you will have a varied daily life with both individual guidance conversations, administrative tasks and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Your main tasks will include, among other things

  • conduct individual guidance conversations with incarcerated individuals about educational and employment opportunities
  • motivate inmates to pursue education – also when they are not immediately within the target group for AVU or FVU
  • advise on educational opportunities during confinement and help ensure the incarcerated individual is steered toward the most relevant offering
  • advise on educational opportunities after transfer to a prison or upon release
  • conduct urgent guidance conversations, e.g. upon new admissions, transfers or interrupted educational pathways
  • obtain examination certificates, educational documentation and previous OBU tests and ensure correct journaling
  • record guidance programs and documentation in PUMA
  • keep inmates’ educational wishes and action plans up to date
  • coordinate waiting lists for instruction in close collaboration with the remand prison teachers
  • collaborate with guidance counselors in other prisons and remand prisons to create good transitions between institutions

The position includes a fair amount of administrative work, where structure, documentation and follow-up are an important part of the task.

You will spend your day across several remand prisons and therefore you must be comfortable with a mobile daily routine where planning and flexibility are a natural part of the job. Several of the remand prisons have limited office facilities, and you must be prepared to work from home. It is also a condition for performing the job that you have a driving license.

We offer

As an employee of Denmark’s Prisons you will become part of a workplace with great social significance and many different professional disciplines.

We offer, among other things

  • the opportunity to help establish and develop a new guidance function in the remand prisons
  • a meaningful job where you can make a concrete difference for people in a crucial phase of their lives
  • a strong cross-disciplinary collaboration with teachers, social workers, prison guards and management
  • a varied daily life with a high degree of autonomy
  • thorough introduction and training in Denmark’s Prisons’ framework and safety procedures
  • professional sparring and opportunity to develop the guidance efforts together with engaged colleagues

Salary and terms of employment

The position is 32 hours per week with expected start on February 1, 2027.

Employment and remuneration are in accordance with the framework agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Teachers’ Central Organization (LC) and CO10, as well as the organizational agreement for guidance counselors at Studievalg Denmark and the Prison Service’s institutions and any applicable local agreements. In addition, allowances may be agreed depending on experience and qualifications.

The workplace is Denmark’s Prisons.

The work location is Aalborg Remand Prison, but with service across the remand prisons in Frederikshavn, Aalborg and Hobro.

It is a condition of employment that you, in connection with the interview, consent to Denmark’s Prisons obtaining and evaluating information about you in the Central Criminal Register.

Who are we?

The remand prisons are part of Denmark’s Prisons and play a central role in the inmates’ path toward either serving their sentence or release. Here we meet people in a crucial phase of their lives, where there is often a need for quick clarification, realistic perspectives and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

As an education counselor you will become part of a new professional group that will strengthen the educationally oriented effort in the remand prisons. Together with schoolteachers, social workers, prison officers and management you contribute to creating coherence in the inmate’s educational pathway – both during the stay in the remand prison and in the transition to prison or release.

You will have a unique opportunity to help develop a new function, where you participate in shaping both tasks, collaboration forms and the future guidance effort.
