About the job
Are you passionate about working at the intersection of general and special education? Do you see the strength in broad child communities, where children with different prerequisites and life circumstances develop together?
Then Columbus might be the perfect place for you.
We are seeking a dedicated pedagogue who can bring their professional expertise into an inclusive child community, where general and special pedagogy complement and strengthen each other.
With us, diversity is a natural part of everyday life, and we work purposefully to create equal participation opportunities, development, learning and well-being for all children.
Who are we?
Columbus is an inclusion group within Børnehuset Midtbyen, located at Skolegade 18 in Silkeborg.
We have 5 places for children who need a special pedagogical intervention (SPI) and 15-16 general kindergarten places. The children are between 3 and 6 years old.
In Columbus we see a particular strength in the meeting between general and special pedagogy. We believe that children with different prerequisites and life circumstances have something valuable to contribute to each other’s development, and that diversity can enrich the community for everyone.
It requires that we as professionals both have an eye for each child’s needs and for the child group as a whole. We work with a high degree of specialized pedagogical professionalism, while safeguarding equal opportunities for play, friendships and shared experiences that characterize ordinary childhood.
Our task is to create safe and development-promoting play – and learning environments where all children feel themselves to be significant participants in the community.
We base our approach on the child’s resources, and believe that it is our responsibility as professionals to adapt the learning environment, the frames, the relationships and our pedagogical approach to the child – not the other way around.
We know that development does not always show itself in big progress. Therefore, we are focused on spotting small but meaningful star moments in the children’s everyday lives. It can be a child who succeeds in regulating themselves, takes the initiative to make contact, or finds a new way into the community.
To notice these moments, understand their significance and use them actively in further pedagogical work is an important part of our professionalism.
A everyday life with professionalism, community and outdoor life
In Columbus we work in smaller groups of children and plan daily life based on the children’s different needs and development opportunities.
Outdoor life is an integrated part of our pedagogical practice. We have our own bus, which we use daily, and a large part of everyday life takes place outside – both in nature and in our own outdoor facilities.
For us, outdoor life is not just about being outside. We use the possibilities offered by different environments to support the children’s development, relationships, independence and participation in the community.
We work cross-disciplinary and have a close collaboration with, among others, the institution’s occupational therapist and physiotherapist as well as external partners.
Who are you?
We are looking for a pedagogue who is passionate about working with children with different prerequisites and life circumstances, and who sees it as an exciting professional task to work at the intersection of general and special pedagogy.
We particularly emphasize that you
- Can work professionally at the intersection of general and special pedagogy, and see the possibilities in the two disciplines enriching each other.
- Have a focus on both the individual child’s needs and the overall child community. Can create participation opportunities where regard for the individual and the community go hand in hand.
- Have a strong interest in special pedagogy, and preferably experience with children with, for example, autism, ADHD or reduced functional ability.
- Can translate your professional knowledge into a clear, structured and present pedagogical practice.
- Are curious about children’s perspectives and focused on finding possibilities rather than limitations.
- Can work systematically with observations, documentation, action plans and evaluation, and have an interest in alternative - and supplementary communication forms.
- Can maintain an overview and create calm, even when children’s needs differ, and everyday life calls for flexibility.
- See parents as important partners and meet them with respect, openness and professionalism.
- Want to actively use outdoor life as part of the pedagogical practice.
- See yourself as an active part of a committed work community, where you contribute with your professionalism, take shared responsibility and work loyally with joint decisions.
- Are motivated for professional sparring and collective reflection, and have the courage to both challenge others and let your own practice be challenged.
It is not crucial whether you have many years of experience or are relatively newly qualified. The most important is your professional curiosity, your engagement with the target group, and your willingness to take responsibility for both your own practice and the common pedagogical task.
We succeed together
We believe that high pedagogical quality is created in collaboration. Therefore, the committed work community is an important part of our professional foundation.
For us, that means taking joint responsibility for the core task, sharing our professional considerations and being curious about both our own and others’ practices.
We must be able to challenge each other professionally, be open to different perspectives and dare to ask questions about what we do. We do not always need to agree, but we expect everyone to contribute actively, take shared responsibility for decisions and translate them into action in everyday life.
We know that working at the intersection between general and special pedagogy can be complex and challenging at times. This calls for us to bring different professional perspectives into play and help each other find solutions that accommodate both the individual child and the community.
And there must be room for humor, job satisfaction and enthusiasm about the small and large star moments we experience together with the children.
What can we offer you?
You will become part of Børnehuset Midtbyen. We are a diverse institution with both general kindergarten places, inclusion groups and special groups.
We offer
- A workplace where general and special pedagogical professionalism complement each other.
- An exciting and varied daily life with focus on children’s development, play, learning, friendships and opportunities to participate.
- Engaged colleagues who value professional sparring, reflection and collaboration.
- Opportunities for professional and personal development through collegial and managerial sparring.
- A close multidisciplinary collaboration.
- A daily life where outdoor life and nature are an active part of the pedagogical effort.
- A close and meaningful collaboration with the children’s parents.
And not least, you will have the opportunity to make a real difference in children’s daily lives – both through large shared experiences and small progress that have great meaning for the individual child.
