External Lecturers for the Role of Education Officers Undergraduate Lecturers (UPL)

Institute of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences at Aarhus University, is seeking from 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible 2-4 external lecturers to perform the role of Educationally Responsible Pregraduate Lecturer (UPL). The positions are advertised for vacancies at the hospital departments in the Central Denmark Region (Region Midtjylland) that function as clinical teaching sites for medical students on the candidate degree, where ongoing assessments are carried out using competence cards.

The positions are time-limited for a five-year period until 31.12.2031, and are offered for a workload of 10 hours per semester.

Institute of Clinical Medicine

As an external lecturer at the Institute of Clinical Medicine you will become part of what is likely the largest health science research institute in Denmark. The clinical research covers all medical specialties and takes place in interaction with the university hospital and regional hospitals in Region Midtjylland. We have about 30,000 m² of modern research facilities for experimental surgery and medicine, animal facilities, and advanced scanners.

The institute has the overall responsibility for the master’s programs in medicine and in molecular medicine. At the institute we are about 670 scientific employees, 500 PhD students and 160 technical/administrative staff, collaborating across disciplines. As an external lecturer you will work at Aarhus University Hospital or another hospital in Region Midtjylland. You can read more about the institute here and about the faculty here .

Your tasks

As an external lecturer and UPL you will be part of the key role regarding clinical student teaching at hospital departments. The detailed framework for the function and tasks is set out in, respectively, Rammer for Uddannelsesansvarlige Prægraduate Lektorer and on the UPL homepage , which are established in a collaboration between Aarhus University and Region Midtjylland.

As UPL you have primarily a special responsibility to ensure that the department carries out specific elements in accordance with learning objectives and study plan:

• Systematic feedback on clinical practice using competence cards
• Ongoing competence assessment and summative testing, including approval of clinical courses.

Educational tasks associated with clinical placements are the responsibility of the entire department and it is expected that all staff groups participate in this, but the UPL role has a decisive part in lifting and coordinating this task by contributing to the following functions:

• Plan and quality assurance of clinical placements: e.g. introduction, logistics, department-specific workflows and procedures, skill training, so that these accommodate the students' learning
• Implementation of activities that students should be able to participate in within the department
• Help ensure that the department's staff have an understanding of the shared responsibility for clinical placements: involvement, supervision, feedback, etc.
• Contribute to the ongoing development of the department's educational culture
• Ensure follow-up and any adjustments of the clinical stays based on evaluations and quality indicators from the university

You will report in your appointment as external lecturer to the clinical chair professor in your specialty.

Your competencies

You have practical experience from medical practice and the doctor’s role, as well as insight into medical education – including teaching. It is also an advantage if you are interested in medical pedagogy and working with learning in the clinic. You are willing and keen to undertake coordination, development and teaching of medical students. Good organizational skills will be valued – you can take the lead, initiate activities, and make them succeed.

As a person you are approachable and possess good collaboration and communication skills. You also have the ability to contribute to a good working environment – also interdisciplinary.

In addition to your appointment as external lecturer and function as UPL, you must be employed as a physician in the department.

Basis of employment

• Employment as an external lecturer requires qualifications at the master’s level.
• Furthermore, employment as an external lecturer requires either relevant high-level practical experience not obtained through a university scientific appointment, or employment in a scientific permanent position at another university.
• An external lecturer appointed on the basis of their relevant practical experience must have in-depth, current knowledge of the application possibilities of the subject/area. This is obtained through employment in the field.
• In addition, employment as an external lecturer requires that teaching qualifications are included in the assessment of applicants for an external lectureship.
