Cemetery worker and church sexton at Simmelkær Church

A position as sexton and cemetery worker for 31 hours per week at Simmelkær Church, Herning Municipality, is available from 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.

We can offer a versatile job where you will, among other things,

• Take care of and be responsible for Simmelkær Cemetery's maintenance, operation and development.
• Administration of the cemetery. Depending on competences and wishes, an agreement with another cemetery may possibly be made regarding certain parts of the administrative tasks.
• Supervision, cleaning and maintenance of the cemetery and the church house grounds, machinery and material area.
• Contact with the people who come to the cemetery.
• Perform the sexton duties during church services.
• Oversee cleaning and preparation of the church and the church house.

We are looking for a sexton who

• Has knowledge of and experience with work at a cemetery.
• Is able to carry out the work at the cemetery independently, so that it appears neat and inviting and is willing to contribute to the development of the cemetery together with the parish council.
• Has the skills and willingness to develop the operation of the cemetery in an economically sustainable way.
• Can speak with and has respect for the many different people who come to the cemetery and to the church.
• Has good knowledge of and loyalty to the duties of the Church of Denmark.
• Has a good sense of humor and a positive attitude to the work and will contribute to a good working environment.
• Is flexible regarding weekend work in relation to church services.

Simmelkær parish has just over 451 inhabitants, of whom 315 are members of the Church of Denmark. The cemetery lies by the church, which was inaugurated in 1894. On the cemetery, all grave sites are located south of the church and are without hedges. We have a few graves with protected gravestones and a huge rhododendron that is more than 100 years old. But please feel free to come and take your own tour of the cemetery and form your own impression.

An cooperation agreement has been entered into with the parish councils in Grove and Ilskov covering mutual staffing in holiday periods and during short-term illness. In addition, there is a network among the sextons so that you can help each other with tasks where it makes sense.

The parish council can inform you that there is a 3-month probation period, and that references and a child safeguarding certificate will be obtained in connection with employment.
