About the job

Do you want to lead the communication in an organization that every day helps develop and drive Denmark's second-largest city? Are you motivated by being a close and trusted advisor to the political and administrative leadership – while also leading a communications department with a broad and central portfolio of tasks?

We offer a role that combines strategic advice, staff leadership and substantial responsibility for setting the communicative direction in Teknik og Miljø. You will have close contact with the councilor, director, management and managers and have the opportunity to shape how complex political, organizational and professional agendas are translated into clear recommendations, relevant communication and professional action.

In Teknik og Miljø we work for a sustainable Aarhus for the next generations. We realize the City Council's visions for the city's physical development and operation within climate, mobility, planning, architecture, green areas and local communities. The organization is characterized by high public attention and engaged citizens, and communication is therefore an integrated part of the overall task solution. We prioritize openness, honesty and active communication with respect for the political process.

You will be part of the Common Staff and join the staff leadership group, where an active contribution to the overall development and support of Teknik og Miljø is expected.

As the new communications chief you will lead the Communications Department with 13 dedicated employees and a broad professional portfolio. You must create direction, prioritize resources and ensure present leadership, qualified sparring and good framework for the employees' professional development. At the same time you must be a secure advisor who can see patterns, identify tomorrow's agendas and navigate the interplay between politics, professionalism, media, citizens and various interests.

Your most central tasks will be to

  • be a close and trusted communications advisor for the councilor, director, management and managers
  • be central in press handling, issues management and communications readiness
  • advise on political agreements, budget negotiations, sensitive individual cases as well as larger strategic and organizational initiatives
  • set the direction for the Communications Department and further develop Teknik og Miljø as a communicative organization

A central role in the development of Aarhus

The position is located where decisions are often made at a complex crossroads between political priorities, professional knowledge, public attention and local interests. The communications chief must ensure that communicative considerations are thought in early in decision-making and task solving - not only when the decision is made, or the press calls. It requires the ability to quickly create an overview, assess what's at stake and formulate a clear recommendation about both action and communication.

The role thus has significant importance for Teknik og Miljø's ability to succeed with daily operations, larger changes and the continued development of Aarhus.

About you

You are an experienced and strategically strong communications profile with political acumen, high decisiveness and sound judgment. You thrive close to decision-makers and want to be boss of people – not only an advisor. Your background could be from a ministry, an agency, a larger municipality, another politically led organization or a larger private company with complex stakeholder management and significant public or media attention.

We imagine you have

  • strong experience with strategic communication, press handling and advising on complex cases
  • political and organizational understanding and ability to navigate safely between different interests
  • impact to bring your professional assessment clearly into play – even when it challenges the immediate perception
  • ability to quickly get to the core, create momentum and translate complex issues into clear solutions
  • a relational and trust-building leadership style with focus on direction, prioritization, development and accessibility
  • calm, situational awareness and judgment when pace is high and the foundation is incomplete
