About the job
Do you want to work broadly with the entire infrastructure stack, from rack and storage to virtualization and HPC? And do you want to help choose the platform(s) we will run on for the coming many years?
We are looking for an experienced infrastructure specialist for the Infrastructure Core team. The position is vacant because a capable colleague is retiring, and you will join the journey toward a well-functioning platform at a time when some significant decisions need to be made.
About us
The IT department at ITU consists of 27 employees spread across five teams with a focus on user support, infrastructure, cloud and applications, as well as networks and security.
We have a trust-based culture with cross-disciplinary collaboration, a broad professional focus for each individual, and room to say no or yes.
About the team
Infrastructure Core delivers the technical foundation: data center - compute, storage and backup. We work with Windows- and Linux-servers, virtualization and monitoring.
Backup and recovery are our responsibility. We prepare contingency plans together with the security and network teams, and the identity platform is managed by the cloud and integration team.
Our IT environment
We operate virtualized environments on VMware, manage Linux and Windows, and our storage and backup are based on Nimble and Veeam. Monitoring runs on PRTG. We are working to build capacity to directly support research, including HPC capacity, where requirements for compute and storage grow rapidly.
In the coming years we face four concrete tasks
- We are leaving VMware and need to evaluate and choose a new virtualization platform
- The IT department takes over the operation of the university's HPC facilities and must build the operating framework around it.
- We consider expanding data center capacity at ITU
- We will increasingly work with research hardware.
You will be central to all four initiatives.
About the position
One day may begin with monitoring and the alerts that require quick action. From there it can go in many directions: capacity planning, restore tests, technical dialogue with a supplier, or a trip down to the data center with a node that needs to be cabled and set up. Other days you sit together with a research group and colleagues from IT to figure out what their project actually needs in terms of infrastructure, or how we implement a new administrative system.
This is a position where you help design the solution, bring it into operation, and ensure it is operated.
Aside from the technical work, you are the technical coordinator in the team. You translate the area lead's priorities into concrete task management, follow up on progress and quality, coordinate with other teams and with suppliers, and ensure that technical debt is handled. Coordination makes up about 15 percent of your time. Personnel responsibility lies with the area lead.
The team contains specialists who are often deeper than you in their areas. Your task is to provide overview and coherence, not to be the best at everything.
Your main tasks
- Responsibility for ITU's storage- and backup platform: capacity, performance and recovery
- Operation of the virtualization environment and a central role in selecting the successor
- Operation of the university's HPC and research infrastructure together with good colleagues from across the house, from physically setting up nodes to drivers, capacity planning and access for researchers
- Practical work with server hardware: installation, cabling, firmware, out-of-band management, troubleshooting and RMA cases, both at ITU and with our suppliers.
- Operation of Windows- and Linux-servers, including lifecycle from procurement and sizing to decommissioning
- Monitoring and capacity planning based on our monitoring from PRTG
- Technical sparring with researchers and administrative departments about infrastructure for concrete projects.
- Documentation and configuration management, so knowledge is available.
- Professional coordination of the team's tasks and deliveries
About you
You have solid experience with storage and virtualization in operations, and you can design and size a solution rather than only keeping it running.
We expect that you
- Have several years of experience with enterprise storage and backups in operation
- Have experience with virtualization in operation and are prepared to assess alternative platforms in a measured way, for example Proxmox, Hyper-V or Nutanix
- Are familiar with server hardware in practice and do not mind standing in a rack with a screwdriver
- Have experience with server operation on Windows or Linux, and can coordinate technically with specialists who are deeper than you in a given area
- Have experience with HPC- or GPU-infrastructure in operation, or are keen to build the competence with the department behind you
- Can talk with a researcher as well as an administrative staff member about their needs and translate that into infrastructure
- Can maintain an overview of a task portfolio and help coordinate deliveries without having managerial authority
- Can explain technology to colleagues who do not share your area of expertise
We view it as a plus if you have practical Linux experience, hardware lifecycle, vendor dialogue, automation or migration between platforms. Experience from research-related IT or the education sector is an advantage.
We know that no one covers all points. If you have depth in one area and the desire to learn the rest, apply. We would rather talk to you than not.
Please also include a concrete example in your application: a solution you have designed, dimensioned or migrated, and what turned out to be harder than expected along the way.
Practical terms
Service windows are planned according to the university's annual cycle, and you should expect planned work outside normal working hours a few times a year. The position involves physical work in the data center and at our colocation provider in Lyngby.
About us
The IT department at ITU consists of about 25 employees distributed across teams within user support, infrastructure, cloud, applications, networks and security. We have a trust-based culture with room to plan and prioritize our own work. Our environment is hybrid: on-prem VMware, Linux and Windows, combined with cloud solutions. ITU has an international research environment, and a large part of daily communication with researchers takes place in English.
ITU is an organization with about 450 employees, 2,850 students and short decision paths. The departments you serve are compact and professionally skilled, and you will quickly get to know the people you work with.
Terms of employment
The appointment is made in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC or another relevant organization.
There will be an opportunity to negotiate individual allowances depending on your qualifications.
The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
