About the job
If you have a heart for creating good teaching for children with special needs, then you are the one we are looking for.
We are seeking a full-time kindergarten class leader at ØsterbyCentret starting January 1, 2027 – or as soon as possible.
About ØsterbyCentret
ØsterbyCentret is a special education offer for students with general and extensive learning difficulties. The department includes students with significant cognitive and physical impairments, language difficulties, and a need for specially tailored teaching and support. What all the students have in common is a need for a specialized, structured, and relational approach that supports their academic, social, and personal development.
We work with a basis in the Danish School Act and focus on creating opportunities for participation, development, and learning for all students. Our goal is to strengthen the students’ competencies so they can, as far as possible, manage their own lives and participate in meaningful communities.
ØsterbyCentret consists of 105 students and 55 staff members.
Opening hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and include both school and after-school care (SFO). The school day runs from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Teaching and pedagogical activities are carried out in close collaboration between teachers, pedagogues, pedagogical assistants, and occupational therapists.
The work of the kindergarten class leader
As a kindergarten class leader, you will be responsible for planning, organizing, and delivering the class teaching with attention to the students’ different ages, developmental levels, and individual needs. You will also be responsible for written documentation, including the preparation of student plans and status reports. A close and trusted collaboration with parents is also an essential part of the job, just as you actively contribute to the multidisciplinary collaboration around the students’ well-being, learning, and development.
As a kindergarten class leader, you will play a central role in creating a safe, structured, and developing school day for children with special needs. Our primary classes in the early years are age-integrated and include students from grades 0–2, which requires a flexible and differentiated approach to teaching and pedagogy. Each class has about 8 students.
You will work to support each child's well-being, learning, development, and social skills based on the child’s abilities and needs. You will plan and implement pedagogical learning activities, create clear and recognizable frameworks, and consider both the individual student’s development and the possibilities for the group.
You will join a close multidisciplinary collaboration with colleagues, parents, and relevant professionals to create the best conditions for all children's participation, learning, and development.
Who are you?
We are looking for a kindergarten class leader who is trained as a pedagogue and preferably has experience in special education work and teaching children with special needs. You meet the students with clarity and high professionalism. You must be able to maintain calm and an overview in a daily routine where students’ needs vary and situations may require both flexibility, patience, and resilience. The job requires you to act professionally and with care—even when students are most emotionally or behaviorally challenged.
A key prerequisite for the role is the ability to adapt your expectations and demands to each student’s developmental level. You should have a playful approach and deliberately use play, relationships, and shared activities as pedagogical tools in everyday life, even with students who are physically older but developmentally have needs, interests, and reaction patterns more typical of younger children.
We expect you to engage in work with all students, including those who need sheltered learning environments and close adult support. This requires both mental and physical resilience and an understanding of working with a complex target group with extensive support needs.
We are looking for a colleague who
Has knowledge of special pedagogy and curiosity for professional development. You work systematically and relationship-oriented, with a basis in an appreciative approach and meet students, parents, and colleagues with credibility, respect, and high professional integrity. You actively contribute to creating a learning environment where well-being, professionalism, and development go hand in hand, and where each student’s potential and needs are central.
You understand the importance of systematic documentation and follow-up and can work independently while being open to reflection on and development of your own practice. You use conflict-reducing strategies and work from a low-arousal approach that supports students’ well-being and participation opportunities.
We would like to meet
A colleague who exudes patience, calm, and at the same time can create structure and overview in a complex daily life. You have a warm heart and meet the children with genuine interest and respect. At the same time, you are clear and present in your communication and manage to balance empathy with professionalism and composure. Your personality is characterized by natural authority, warmth, and the ability to create safe conditions for the students’ development.
Our philosophy
At ØsterbyCentret we believe that all children can learn and develop. Each child is valuable and has something unique to contribute. We create the framework for a community where diversity is a strength and where friendships have the opportunity to flourish. Our students invite us to look behind their behavior, and our view of children is that they do well if they can.
At ØsterbyCentret you will meet
- Unique and lively children, each with something special to offer
- Dedicated colleagues who dare to stand by themselves and by each other
- Leadership that trusts your professionalism and judgment
- A work environment characterized by humor, flexibility, and a positive view of people
