About the job

Do you enjoy nursing where you must observe, assess, coordinate and think a few steps ahead? And would you like to become even more skilled in geriatrics?

Then the Elderly Admission might be something for you.

It can be the patient who has fallen several times in recent weeks. The patient who suddenly can no longer do the same as before. The older person with dizziness, weight loss, cognitive impairment or polypharmacy – and where there is a need to figure out what really happened and what should happen now.

Here your clinical eye and your nursing assessment will be crucial .

In the Elderly Admission, we work with acute geriatric assessment and clarification. Our task is not only to treat what is acute – but together with the patient, the relatives and our cross-disciplinary partners to figure out what has happened, what the patient needs, and what the right next step is.

Geriatrics – a specialty with a future

We are getting more elderly people, and more will live longer with disease, frailty, and the need for treatment and support across hospital, municipality, and home.

Therefore, competencies within geriatric nursing are increasingly important.

In the Elderly Admission you get the opportunity to become proficient in exactly that: to see the whole person, to notice small changes, to create an overview in complex problems.

And we want to invest in your professionalism . Therefore we work purposefully with competency development and among other things want to give our staff the opportunity for geriatric education .

Who are we?

The Elderly Admission is located at North Zealand Hospital in Hillerød as part of the Combined Emergency Department.

Organizationally we are part of the Department of the Elderly and Multimorbidity , which operates on both the Hillerød and Frederikssund catchment areas.

In Hillerød we have 8 beds in the Elderly Admission . Here patients are typically admitted for observation, treatment, assessment and clarification for up to two days.

For some the progression ends with them being able to go home again with the right plan and support, for others the progression ends with admission to either our own ward or to another specialty.

This means that there is high professional intensity and short patient pathways , and that you as a nurse play an important role very early in the patient’s admission.

It is therefore rarely one diagnosis alone that tells us what the patient needs.

Instead, we work with understanding the whole patient’s situation and functional level and creating a realistic and coherent continuation of care.

In Hillerød we also have our geriatric team, consisting of a nurse and a doctor.

The team goes daily to the Emergency Department beds and identifies patients within our professional profile. Here a geriatric review and initial nursing assessment are performed so that we early create a good foundation for the patient’s further course.

As a nurse in the Elderly Admission you will, among other things,

  • observe and assess acutely ill elderly patients
  • work with function, mobility, nutrition and cognition
  • have an eye for the patient’s habitual level of function and changes herefrom
  • contribute to medication review and identify issues related to polypharmacy
  • plan and coordinate short and complex patient pathways
  • work closely with doctors, therapists, relatives and municipal partners
  • contribute to good and safe discharges
  • be involved in assessing whether the patient needs further admission, outpatient follow-up or can return home
  • develop geriatric nursing together with your colleagues.

Who do we hope you are?

You may already have experience with geriatrics, acute nursing or a medical specialty.

You may have worked for a few years and miss a place where you can use your clinical eye even more.

Or perhaps geriatrics is new to you, but you are curious when the patient’s problem cannot be explained by one diagnosis.

We hope that you

  • are a qualified nurse
  • are interested in the elderly patient and complex nursing
  • enjoy a daily life with short pathways and changing problems
  • work independently but thrive in close multidisciplinary collaboration
  • are curious about your own and others’ professionalism
  • want to help develop our new geriatric profile.

Become part of the geriatric nursing we will need even more

For us, geriatrics is not just about age.

It is about figuring out what matters to this particular patient, what the patient could do before, what has changed – and what is needed to create the best possible continuation of care.

If this way of thinking about nursing appeals to you, we would love to hear from you.
