About the job

Are you our new social worker? Make a difference for sick and vulnerable children and young people at the Department of Children and Young People, Amager and Hvidovre Hospital

Do you want to be the bridge between the health care system and the social sector? Are you curious about the hospital world, and would you like to apply your social work expertise in a close, multidisciplinary collaboration? Then you may be the social worker we are seeking for the Department of Children and Young People at Amager and Hvidovre Hospital.

Who are we?

The Department of Children and Young People is, with its approximately 250 staff, one of the country’s largest general pediatric departments. We examine and treat children and young people of all ages—from preterm infants (gestational week 28) and up to 18 years. The department provides treatment at a high specialized level within pediatric gastroenterology and infectious diseases, but we see children in virtually all aspects of pediatrics.

We have a high flow with a large number of acute and outpatient patient pathways

  • Circa 18,000 acute contacts annually at our Pediatric Emergency Department.
  • Circa 900 admissions annually at our neonatal unit for newborns.
  • Circa 3,000 admissions annually in our inpatient ward for the remaining children and young people.
  • Circa 12,000 outpatient consultations annually.

Your tasks

As our sole social worker in the department, you will have a broad and exciting collaborative interface across all parts of the department. You will help ensure that we provide a holistic and multidisciplinary approach where social aspects are considered closely together with somatic treatment.

Your primary tasks will be to

  • Advise families: You advise parents of children with permanent disabilities or chronic illness about support possibilities, care leave and parental leave rules.
  • Clarify complex cases: You help illuminate social, psychological and psychiatric aspects around the child and family to ensure smooth transitions to the social sector.
  • Hold conversations and contribute to drafting notifications: You speak with hospitalized families to clarify their social situation and draft notifications in close collaboration with other healthcare staff.
  • Be an internal consultant: You consult with the department's staff on the social work area and, among other things, educate about the duty to report under the Children’s Act.
  • Collaborate across sectors: You participate in internal conferences, arrange network meetings and act as a facilitator in the cross-sector collaboration with the municipalities.
  • Strengthen early intervention: You contribute to the department’s work to increase focus on better identification and relevant action for patients in vulnerable families.

Who are you?

You are professionally grounded in social work and motivated to apply your expertise in a completely new, somatic context. It requires that you are adaptable, proactive, and curious about the mechanisms of the health care system.

We imagine that you

  • Have experience with family work and children/young people with special needs from the municipal sector and/or child and adolescent psychiatry .
  • Have good communication skills in both Danish and English .
  • Are able to maintain an overview and prioritize and structure your work tasks independently .
  • Are interested in the legislation in the area (Children’s Act, Parental Responsibility Act, Maternity Leave Act) and are keen to quickly familiarise yourself with the Health Act.
  • Have enthusiasm to teach and share your knowledge with other professional groups.

You will not be left to yourself

Since there are no other social workers in the department, we have ensured that you receive a solid framework for your onboarding and daily work. You will share an office with our experienced clinical nursing specialist , and you will have two schoolteachers as well as a training supervisor as close colleagues in the department.

In addition, you will be assigned a permanent mentor , who is one of our experienced pediatric doctors. She has a master's degree in at-risk children and youth from Aalborg University, experience from the Center for Social Pediatrics and is the department’s coordinator for initiatives aimed at vulnerable families. She will help you settle in and serve as your professional translator in the somatic world. You will also have the opportunity to consult with the hospital’s lawyers and social workers from pediatric departments at other hospitals in the region.

The practical
