About the job
Specialist doctor or senior physician for lung cancer assessment at Zealand University Hospital
We are seeking a specialist in pulmonary medicine for our pulmonary medicine team. The position is an expansion of the current medical staffing, which is to strengthen lung cancer assessment in Roskilde and Næstved.
We are looking for you who have interest and competencies within lung cancer assessment, and who would like to further develop your invasive skills as part of a well-functioning team that is not afraid to explore new paths in patient evaluation. It would also be an advantage if you can function as the educational supervisor for the department's main training doctors in pulmonary medicine.
The position is available for filling by February 2027 or as soon as possible.
The pulmonary medicine specialty in the department
In the period up to 2028, we are preparing for the move to the future Zealand University Hospital (SUH) in the new hospital building in Køge. The current infiltrate units in Roskilde and Næstved will then be consolidated in newly refurbished premises in Køge. The planned fusion of functions will create one of Denmark's largest pulmonary medicine centers, with a broad palette of specialized and general functions, and will support our goal of being among the frontrunners within pulmonary medicine in Denmark.
In the new hospital there will also be an exceptional direct access to collaboration with the eight other internal medical specialties, which, like the pathology department, oncology and nuclear medicine, are all gathered on one campus – and the outpatient clinic will have the ENT outpatient clinic as a neighbor.
The specialty is served as of 1 December 2026 by 11 specialists in Roskilde and 7 in Næstved. Of these, 8 are part of the invasive team. In addition, the department has a clinical professorship that spans the two campuses.
One of the department’s inpatient wards in Roskilde mainly treats specialized pulmonary medical patients. Patients are admitted either directly from the Emergency Department/outpatient clinic or transferred from the region's other hospitals. In Næstved there is a ward with the option for specialized pulmonary medical treatment including home NIV and high-flow therapy.
The department has regional functions within all areas of pulmonary medicine and allergology, and the outpatient clinic covers the entire pulmonary medical/allergological spectrum, except for treatment of rare interstitial lung diseases including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
The outpatient functions on each of the two campuses include a “classic” pulmonary medicine outpatient clinic, an allergy outpatient clinic, and an infiltrate unit. In the infiltrate units we have, among other things, the possibility for endoscopy (bronchoscopy with electromagnetic navigation and p-EBUS, EBUS, EUS, EUS-B), percutaneous biopsies (fluoroscopy, ultrasound-guided), and placement of permanent pleural drains. In Næstved, CT-guided biopsies are also performed by the pulmonary physicians, and in Næstved a pleural clinic has been established with, among other things, medical thoracoscopy.
The specialized outpatient services also include, among others
- Home NIV
- Advanced asthma assessment with methacholine and mannitol provocations, EVH and IOS
- Biologic therapy for severe asthma
- Basic as well as complex allergological assessments with provocation tests
- Allergen-specific immunotherapy
- Evaluation and treatment of bronchiectasis, nontuberculous mycobacteria and other complicated lung infections such as aspergillosis
What we can offer
You will join the group of pulmonary specialists with primary attachment to the infiltrate team. In addition, there is the possibility of attachment to one of the other specialties. The distribution of clinical time can be agreed based on interest and qualifications, and there will be the opportunity to have your own area of responsibility.
The responsibility for the department’s pulmonary medicine main training doctors is shared by two specialists. We are seeking a specialist who can take on the role of educational supervisor as a senior physician/specialist, and it would be advantageous if you can participate in this.
As a specialist in pulmonary medicine at the future SUH, you will contribute to the development of one of Denmark’s largest pulmonary medicine centers. When appointed as a senior physician, we offer that you have an area you are responsible for, in collaboration with the ward and department leadership. We offer a stimulating work environment with a focus on personal and professional growth, where you can shape the future of pulmonary medicine at SUH.
Part-time employment is possible if you wish. We also offer remote work days with, for example, handling CT scans, telephone consultations, etc.
Until we move to Køge, you will be required to be present in Roskilde and Næstved. The primary workplace can be in Roskilde or Næstved, depending on your preferences. You will predominantly be at the main workplace, but we also want you to be present at the other campus on a weekly basis. The on-call back-up function in pulmonary medicine is a shift outside the place of service/standby duty – participation in the on-call duty is an option that can be included in the overall discussion of the position contents and terms of employment.
Department of Pulmonary and Infectious Diseases
The Department of Pulmonary and Infectious Diseases has so far been part of the Medical Department in Roskilde, but will become an independent department from 1 January 2027. Until we move to Køge in January 2028, there will still be close collaboration and on-call sharing with nephrology in Roskilde, which will become part of the Department of Nephrology, Arthritis and Connective Tissue Diseases. The department handles primarily specialized functions within its subspecialties, while inpatient care for general, non-specialized conditions is largely handled at the region’s other hospitals.
The specialties have good collaboration and you will experience an inclusive atmosphere in the staff, with a pleasant medical and interprofessional collaboration.
Research
In the department, you will have the opportunity to be involved in a well-established research environment with a clinical professor in both subspecialties, project nurses, and several PhD students.
Professor Uffe Bødtger is the head of the pulmonary research unit in Region Zealand (PLUZ). The pulmonary research field is particularly strong in invasive cancer assessment and pleural diseases with ongoing and extensive publications in international journals and participation in international research networks.
Our ambition for the pulmonary research at SUH is to be at the forefront of pulmonary research both nationally and internationally. With the upcoming consolidation of functions and resources in Køge, we want to further strengthen our research environment, integrating clinical practice with cutting-edge research. Our goal is to broaden our research network, attract more researchers and PhD students, and expand participation in international research networks.
We want to focus on research that can quickly translate into improved patient care, and we aim to offer attractive career and development opportunities for our researchers.
Teaching
Sjællands University Hospital collaborates with the University of Copenhagen. We provide clinical teaching of medical students in the 3rd semester bachelor and 3rd semester master according to an agreement with the University of Copenhagen. In addition to research professorships, the department has several clinical professorships.
Medical postgraduate training is a high-priority area and includes training for doctors in
- Introductory positions
- Main training in general practice
- Main training in five medical specialties
In general, the department places emphasis on creating a good educational environment for all doctors with opportunities for professional sparring and development.
Qualifications
We are seeking a specialist in pulmonary medicine who wants to be part of a good team and who can help lift both daily operations and the department’s development. In addition to professional competencies, we are seeking a specialist with good personal qualities, with the ability to collaborate and communicate constructively; both with colleagues and across professional boundaries.
When employed as a senior physician, we expect your clinical competences to be fully developed, that you contribute to taking responsibility for creating an motivating work culture in the department, and that you are ready to take on an area of responsibility in the department.
We place emphasis on
- Documented professional qualifications in lung cancer assessment and invasive procedures
