About the job

Do you have experience measuring and analyzing volatile organic compounds (VOCs)? Would you bring your expertise to bear across agriculture, food and the environment? Then you might be our new colleague.

At Teknologisk Institut we work to identify challenges and develop, test and document future technologies for agriculture and the agro-industry. Our PTR-MS instrument is today primarily used to measure VOCs from barns and storage, but we want to use the instrument more broadly within agriculture and foods. We have, among other things, projects that measure mold production in foods and stress effects in plants.

We are therefore seeking a specialist with deep, practical experience in using PTR-TOF-MS (Proton Transfer Reaction - Time of Flight - Mass Spectrometry) to measure VOCs within agriculture and possibly foods. You will be responsible for the professional development of its use, as well as quality assurance and operation of the instrument.

Specialist with professional responsibility for PTR-TOF-MS

As our specialist in the area, your primary task will be to develop and drive new tasks in collaboration with a team of specialists and technical consultants within different areas, e.g. agriculture and biogas plants, foods and biodiversity. You will be responsible for the professional area – both in commercial test and advisory tasks and in larger, complex research and development projects.

Your primary tasks

  • Method development for PTR-TOF-MS: You help extend the instrument’s applications and develop measurement methods for measurements in different environments and on different sample types. In addition, you contribute to ongoing maintenance and quality assurance of the instrument.
  • Data processing and interpretation of results: You process, visualize and interpret complex data (high-resolution data, time series, etc.) in collaboration with our data and statistics team.
  • Cross-disciplinary use: You plan and are responsible for measurements across the centre’s areas such as:
  • Agriculture and environment : Measurement of emissions from barns and slurry, evaluation of reduction technologies and animal welfare.
  • Food and aroma : Analysis of complex aroma profiles, nose/mouth air analyses (in vivo), fermentation processes, flavor quality and early detection of mold growth.
  • Soil, plants and microbiology : Characterization of VOC profiles from microbial activity in soil (e.g. in regenerative agriculture) and monitoring of plant stress.
  • Project management and advisory: You provide professional advice to customers, report back and actively participate in applications for new research and development projects (e.g. GUDP, MUDP and EU funds) and contribute to the development of commercial business.

Your profile

You have a master's degree or PhD in chemistry, environmental chemistry, biotechnology, physics or similar. In addition, we expect you to meet the following:

  • Expertise in PTR-TOF-MS: You have solid, practical experience using PTR-TOF-MS in the laboratory as well as in the field, including both hardware, software and troubleshooting.
  • Strong analytical sense: You have extensive experience with chemometrics, data processing of large datasets and interpretation of complex VOC profiles, preferably within the agriculture and food sector.
  • Development- and project-oriented: You are motivated to apply your specialist knowledge across different areas and can contribute with new ideas and solutions in collaboration with specialists from other disciplines. You can convey complex knowledge in an easily understandable way to customers and collaborators.

You will become part of Teknologisk Institut

You will work at the Landbrug og Digitalisering center in Skejby near Aarhus. Here about 65 development-oriented colleagues work together in a professional competence center with specialties in agronomy, field technology, statistics, AI, microbiology and biotechnology. We primarily use and develop these competencies in connection with the green transition in agriculture and related sectors. The center is part of the Production and Foods division, which has about 350 employees.

We offer a dynamic and spacious workplace with a high degree of freedom with responsibility, where you will have the opportunity to unfold and achieve results. You will become part of a growing team of dedicated colleagues, where we support each other and recognize the value of drawing on each other’s competencies to create the best results.
