Are you Denmark's new defense adviser in London?

Are you passionate about security and defense policy, and do you want to contribute to strengthening the cooperation in this area between Denmark and a central ally? Do you have international outlook and an interest in advancing Danish interests at an important time? And do you enjoy working with dynamic and dedicated people in a professionally strong environment? Then you should consider applying for the position of defense adviser in London.

About us

Europe is in a new security-political reality, and the Defence is undergoing a comprehensive strategic transformation, which involves a historic strengthening. Denmark and the United Kingdom have close ties and are continuously working to develop the strong relationship in the field of security and defense policy.

Cooperation with the United Kingdom takes place in all military and emergency management domains. It has developed significantly in line with the security-political situation and in these years is particularly marked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, focus on NATO's northern flank (Arctic) and NATO's efforts to ensure credible deterrence and defense.

About the position

The Defence Department at the embassy in London plays a central role in the collaboration on the security and defense policy area between Denmark and the United Kingdom. As a defense adviser you will formally be under the Defence Attaché but in practice work independently and often in cooperation with the embassy's political section. Your main tasks will be to:

  • Keep the Ministry of Defense, the Defence Command and other Danish authorities informed about current defense and security policy issues in the United Kingdom, including positions and expectations for meetings in NATO and other multilateral fora
  • Maintain and further develop defense cooperation and the relationships between Denmark and the United Kingdom
  • Build and maintain close working relationships with key personnel in the British Ministry of Defence as well as other relevant ministries, authorities and defense industry actors
  • Collect information and report on British military organization, scope and development
  • Provide support for planning and carrying out various visits, meetings, courses and similar, including ministerial visits
  • Contribute to advising the Danish ambassador to the United Kingdom on defense and security policy matters and in daily work closely cooperate with the embassy's political section in coordination with the defence attaché
  • Support Danish companies in the defense industry in establishing partnerships and developing contracts in connection with their work in the United Kingdom

The position is based at the Danish embassy in London. It is also expected that you will cover relevant developments in defence and security policy in Ireland.

About you

We expect you to have a relevant academic background as well as experience within the security and defense policy area.

To be considered for the position we value the following qualities

  • Broad knowledge of international affairs, including knowledge and experience of cooperating with the United Kingdom, NATO and/or JEF
  • An overview and the ability to handle complex situations
  • A holistic view and strong analytical abilities
  • Very good communication skills both in writing and orally in Danish and English
  • Good diplomatic skills and cultural understanding

As a defense adviser in London you will manage the existing cooperation with one of Denmark's closest allies at both political and strategic levels. You should also have an eye for development opportunities and potential new collaborations in the defense field, which may arise as a result of changes in the overall security-political situation as well as in British security-political priorities.

Personally you are proactive, outgoing and have the ability to solve large and small tasks independently, quickly and efficiently. The position requires a high degree of flexibility and adaptability. You also have a talent for networking and can collaborate with people across different professional and cultural backgrounds.

You manage to handle complex political issues and conduct yourself diplomatically. It is an advantage if you have experience from the Ministry of Defense's department, the Ministry of Defense's agencies or the Defence Command (NIV I) or from previous international work.

Terms of employment

You are a university graduate and will be employed as a special consultant or chief consultant under the applicable collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and academics in the state. Depending on qualifications there will also be a possibility to negotiate allowances. There is an employer-financed pension scheme of 18.07% tied to the position.

During the deployment you will be posted under a special attaché arrangement and will be subject to the instructions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and receive a tax-free hardship allowance.
