About the job

New children are moving into Søhuset, and therefore we are expanding our staff group.

Are you keen to work closely with children and young people with substantial disabilities? And do you thrive in a daily life where relationships, care, activities and development are closely linked?

Then you might be our new colleague at Søhuset.

At Søhuset, children and young people aged 0–18 with significant and lasting physical and cognitive disabilities live. They need extensive support for care, well-being and development – around the clock.

As a care and pedagogy assistant you will become part of the daily staffing and work closely with pedagogues and other professional groups to create a safe, recognizable and meaningful everyday life for the individual child.

With us development can show itself in the smallest things. It can be a child becoming clearer in what it wants, a movement or a sound we learn to understand, or a child gradually able to participate more in an activity. It requires presence, patience and desire to really get to know each individual child.

Everyday life at Søhuset With us care, welfare and development go hand in hand.

A large part of the children communicate without spoken language. Therefore we must be curious about their signals and what their behavior tells us. Some children have extensive physical disabilities, epilepsy and need help with almost all everyday activities. Others can respond outwardly or self-harm when surroundings or demands become too difficult.

In daily life you will, among other things, work with

  • care and welfare – support for personal care, meals and other everyday tasks
  • relationships and communication – learn the individual child’s signals and create security through presence and recognizability
  • activities and development – participate in play, sensory activities, outings and daily activities based on the child’s needs and development level
  • structure and support – help create a predictable everyday life and adapt demands and framework to the individual child
  • professional collaboration – share your observations and experiences and contribute in team meetings, staff meetings and daily sparring
  • documentation – document relevant observations and follow the goals and agreements we work from.

At Søhuset we are typically 6 staff members together with around 8 children and young people. You often have a particular focus on 1–2 children at a time. This makes it possible to be close to the individual child, build strong relationships and tailor the support to the child’s needs and daily form.

The pace varies. Sometimes quick action is needed, other times there should be calm and time to wait for a small initiative, a movement or a signal from the child.

You will become part of a professional community We work from a common professional direction with neuro-pedagogy and Low Arousal as central approaches. We are focused on understanding what lies behind the child’s reactions, and how we can adjust our approach and the framework around the child.

You will become part of a community where we share observations, experiences and ideas and together explore what works for the individual child. We work with team meetings, supervision, documentation and ongoing professional sparring.

You do not need a pedagogical education or experience from the special sector. Instead we expect you to be curious, take responsibility for your part of the task and want to learn and develop together with your colleagues.

We offer You will become part of a safe and helpful community, where we support each other in the tasks and share responsibility in daily life. As a new colleague you will be warmly received and will have time, support and sparring to settle well into the job.

We offer among other things

  • a thorough introduction process
  • training in transferring, medication management and conflict management
  • mentor scheme and supervision
  • opportunity to develop your competences within the special pedagogical field.

“It is important that newcomers are well received and have time to settle into the house, and that there is follow-up on how they are doing – that they are taken under wings. It is not expected that you can do everything after a week.”

  • Pedagogue, Søhuset

We are looking for a care and pedagogy assistant who…

  • want to work with children and young people with significant and lasting disabilities
  • see care and welfare as a natural and important part of the job
  • are present, patient and curious about the individual child’s signals, needs and reactions
  • want to work with relations, activities, structure and development
  • can remain calm and adapt their approach when a child is having a difficult time
  • want to learn about neuro-pedagogy and Low Arousal and translate what you learn into daily life
  • thrive in close collegial collaboration, take responsibility and contribute with your observations
  • have a driving license.

You do not need experience from the special sector. The most important is that you want to work with the target group, are curious and have the courage to learn. We provide introduction, training and professional support along the way.

About Søhuset Søhuset is one of Region Nordjylland’s special children’s homes. Here live children and young people with various and complex physical and cognitive disabilities.

At Søhuset there are currently 6 resident children, and 5 children come for respite care. The children have different needs for support in daily life – some need support for most things, others for everything.

We work closely in a multidisciplinary team with één shared goal: to give the children and the young people a safe, predictable and developmental everyday life.

The children and young people can, among other things, have autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and attachment disorders. Several have little or no verbal language, and therefore we also work with alternative and augmentative communication.

Everyone needs an individually tailored, recognizable and structured daily life. Our professional work is based, among other things, on the professional relationship, neuro-pedagogy and Low Arousal.
